Boxing 101: Essentials For The Ring Every Boxer Needs

By Annika Caniza - August 17, 2022

Boxing is a great sport, whether you’re at it for fitness or to become the next champ. So here’s everything you’ll need to get to hitting.

Boxing is one of the best ways to stay fit. It’s a full-body workout in one go, it improves your endurance, and it’s a great source of cardio.

Plus, it’s convenient too. You don’t need a lot to start, but you’ll want to make sure you’re starting right. Here are the few things you’ll need to start boxing.

Boxing gloves

Buying a pair of boxing gloves might seem simple enough, but once you start looking through your options, you’ll find that there’s actually a lot of technicality to it.

But as a beginner, you don’t need to worry about getting technical. Let’s start with the basics.

Boxing gloves are normally categorized by weight, the most common ones ranging from around 10 to 16 ounces. As the gloves get heavier, the padding and protection get thicker, but the punching speed gets slower (and vice versa).

The general rule of thumb many beginners follow is to choose your glove based on your weight.

Boxing gloves

Athletes who are heavier tend to punch harder, so they’ll need thicker protection.

As for the fit, it’s relatively simple. Here are a few things to keep in mind when you’re fitting your gloves:

  • Try the gloves on with inner wraps
  • With the inner wraps, the gloves should feel snug (but not tight)
  • You should easily be able to curl your hand into a fist

Overall, though, there’s no real need to overthink the gloves at this stage. The bottom line is that you should feel comfortable when you start learning all the moves.

Hand wraps

Hand wraps will be as essential to you as the gloves. The wraps you wear over your hands act as a barrier to protect your bones—especially your knuckles. Because let’s face it, landing a punch is not supposed to be comfortable.

When you put on the inner wraps, they will go down to your wrists too, adding support to the entire hand.

While there are many inner wraps on the market suited for different styles of martial arts, we recommend starting with traditional boxing hand wraps. These ones are usually made out of cotton and are reusable.

Choosing the length of your hand wraps will be the next step. Typically, traditional hand wraps will go anywhere between 120 to 180 inches. Similar to choosing your gloves, the general rule of thumb is to go for a shorter length if you have smaller hands, and vice versa. Most boxers just estimate this for themselves.

Boxing hand wraps

But, if you want our advice, we recommend going for a longer wrap than you might think. As a beginner, it’s better to have more support on your hands, especially while you’re still learning proper technique.

You can always winnow down a few inches over time.

Bonus tip: if you plan on boxing multiple times a week, we also recommend buying more than one pair of wraps. They get absolutely soaked, and you won’t want to reuse the same pair the following day.

Bonus: A jump rope

While this is not technically something you need for the act of boxing (you don’t need a rope to throw a punch), a jump rope will help you build a solid foundation for the sport.

Boxers are known to be jumping rope constantly as part of their training. We’ve all seen the iconic Rocky jump-rope scenes, right? They have good reason for adding it to their routine.

Here are a few reasons why jumping rope will add value to you as a boxer:

Jump ropes

If you decide to add a rope to your shopping list, it will be the perfect way to warm up for a boxing session.

When choosing a jump rope, any rope will add value to your workout. Just make sure it’s the right length for your body. The general rule to follow is to make sure your rope is never longer than three feet more than your height.

And that’s it! Boxing is a great way to work out, and it’s a great sport too. But in any case, you’re sure to be ready to start out your journey with these essentials.

Scoring in Style: How to Spice Up Your Tennis Outfits

By Annika Caniza - August 17, 2022

When you’re a beginner, it can be hard to win every match. But that doesn’t mean you can’t score some style points with your tennis outfits.

Dressing for a tennis game is generally a no-brainer. Just pick up a pair of sweat-wicking top and bottoms and your shoes and you’re set.

A simple outfit will do the job on the court for sure. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t still jazz up your style when you play.

Here are some simple ways you can score in style.

All about the entrance

They say that showing up is half the battle. And sometimes, it’s true. Showing up to your tennis match with a little extra effort put into your outfit might psych out your opponent early on.

And bonus points for you: walking onto the court looking like you own it will give you an extra boost of confidence.

Like Nick Kyrgios, you can show up looking real chill. He’s certainly ready to play—he’s got his outfit on and his bag with all his stuff. But showing up with his headphones on and shoes in hand gives him a relaxed vibe. He’s not looking nervous at all.

The way Emma Raducanu’s jacket matches her cute bottoms makes her look like she put in the effort, but actually, the pieces do the work for her. If you wanna keep it simple yet stylish, you could go for a coordinated look when showing up too.

Clearing your vision

The great thing about tennis is that when it comes to the battle between style versus function, you can have it both ways.

If you’re playing outdoors and in the sun, you can spice up your outfit by adding a cap or a visor. Like Leylah Fernandez here, the visor not only keeps her eyes from the sun, but also makes her entire outfit look more complete.

When you go for a cap or a visor, you get extra style points if it matches your top or bottom too.

Tennis games get really sweaty. How many times have you ended a match with your clothes all soaked?

As Rafa Nadal does, you can roll up some sweatbands over your wrists to wipe off your sweat before every serve. Sliding these on will not only keep your vision clear, but also show your opponent that you mean business.

Now if you get very very sweaty whenever you play (or if you just wanna go for the look), go and add a sweatband on your head too. This is also a great option if you want to keep your hair out of the way. Style points plus helping you play better? Sign me up.

Legs for days

When you’re playing tennis, you’ll be shuffling back and forth to chase down those balls. So outfits that give your legs the most freedom to do so are a great option. Plus, it looks great.

There’s something about tennis dresses and tennis skirts that make me just want to wear them to every workout. They flatter the arms (show off those guns) and they lengthen your legs (legs for days!) and they let you move freely through the court.

Plus, those white skirts they wear at Wimbledon? You could totally wear those to your golf game or for a hike too. The versatility comes with the style.

If skirts aren’t your vibe, you could also go for a full-on bodysuit as Serena Williams does. And I mean, if a 23-time Grand Slam Champion can win in one, I’m sure you can too.

And if you can’t choose, go for Coco Gauff’s style—a hybrid of both! She’s got the bodysuit going on, but the skirt flows around as she jumps and runs when she plays. We’re loving the print too.

Add to cart!

So go ahead and add those little details into your tennis game. Tennis is one of the most popular recreational sports, so the options out there are endless.

The devil’s in the details, so adding the simplest additions to your outfit already makes you look well-prepared. And you’ll want your opponent to think you are, even if sometimes you aren’t.

And the best part of showing up well dressed: if can’t score in your games, at least you’ll be scoring style points.

How Many Of These Pro-Level Tennis Moves Do You Have In Your Arsenal?

By Annika Caniza - August 17, 2022

Tennis is easy to learn, but it can be a challenge to spice up the basic moves. How well do you match up to these pro-level tennis moves?

When you’re a beginner playing tennis, usually, your main objective is very simple: to get the ball on the other side of the court. We’ve all been beginners at one point.

But once a player starts to feel more comfortable on the court and the shots begin to come more naturally, that’s when the fun can really begin.

Once you get your basic shots down, you then have the allowance to play around a little more and try out some of the oldest tennis moves in the book. How many of these pro-level tennis shots have you been able to make?

The perfect ace

Let’s start off with the ace.

An ace in tennis refers to a legal serve that your opponent cannot get to. Essentially, hitting an ace gets you a point without needing to return any more shots.

Getting your serve in tennis is not an easy feat. In fact, most beginners don’t serve the ball from overhead until later on because when you’re starting out, it can just be a real challenge getting it within the right limits.

But once you get comfortable serving, you can start working towards the ace. It’s a killer when done right, and if you’re like Emma Raducanu, it can even win you the entire match.

Just watch how stealthily Emma took her the US Open championship with that ace. It looks like an easy way to get a point, but there is more than what meets the eye.

The drop shot

The drop shot is one of the most fun to watch the pros nail. One of the players who execute drop shots well almost every time is Novak Djokovic.

A drop shot refers to a gentle shot that sends the ball just over the net, as Djokovic has perfected in this video from the US Open.

The drop shot takes a while to nail the drop shot, especially for beginners. This is usually because drop shots, as we said, are done with gentle hits, and most beginners usually focus on finding their power.

For this, a player needs to strike a balance between enough power to get it over the net, but not too much that it goes any further than that.

Keeping the ball close to the net is what will have your opponent sprinting after that ball.

And just like the ace, though it is so smooth to watch, don’t let the pros deceive you.

The volley

When you’re watching a tennis match, the back-and-forth rallies usually have a rhythm to them. Hit, bounce, hit, bounce. You can hear it in your head, right?

A volley is meant to derail that rhythm.

Volleys refer to return shots that players take before the ball bounces. Watch Serena Williams here take the volley for the point.

Volley shots usually fall closer to the net, so similar to a drop shot, it’ll surprise your opponent and have them running to chase it. Notice here how the opponent just couldn’t reach it in time.

Volleys require precision though. It’s much harder to hit a ball at full speed versus when it’s coming at you from a bounce. But, as the video shows you, having it in your back pocket can make you an unpredictable opponent.

The slice

The slice is subtle, but it’s killer (the name suits it well, doesn’t it?).

A slice refers to a shot taken by literally slicing your racket in a quick, downward motion. Watch how Rafa Nadal nails it. You may need to repeat it a few times to notice—that’s how subtle it can be.

But it isn’t just for style points—slices are used strategically. When you hit a ball with that same downward motion, it forces the ball to spin back in your direction, causing the ball to stay low.

If your ball stays low as you want it to, your opponent will be challenged to try to return it back with power. Or, they just won’t return it at all. We prefer the latter.

Balls hit by slices also travel slower, so you can also use the slice to buy yourself a little more time to get to an optimal position for your next shot.

If you’ve mastered the slice, we bow down to you. It’s one of the killer tennis moves.

The one-handed backhand

Finally, we have to mention the one-handed backhand, one of the most challenging tennis moves. If this is one of your specialties, consider us impressed.

The one-handed backhand is one of the hardest moves to achieve because, for most beginners, coaches and trainers will have players perform a two-handed backhand.

In fact, Novak Djokovic himself prefers the two-hander, and he isn’t alone. Fewer players, even among the pros, are using the two-handed backhand nowadays. This is because the two-handed backhand is better for stability, control, and power.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrBK7kG6S04

But the one-handed backhand has its perks too. It’s easier to volley and slice from a backhand position with one hand. And plus, it looks suave.

This move in particular is not one you need in your arsenal, especially if your two-handed backhand is getting you where you need to be.

But, only a few players can do it to perfection, making it somewhat of a rarity like Roger Federer, who is known for this move.

So if you wanna perfect this move, tips from Federer are tips from the best.

So of all the tennis moves, tell us, which ones do you currently have in your arsenal? And which ones are you hoping to add to your skillset next?

Three things we loved about Draymond Green’s wedding

By Annika Caniza - August 17, 2022

Last Sunday, Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green celebrated his wedding to his longtime partner, Hazel Renee. And it was the wedding of the season.

Although official photos of the wedding haven’t been released yet, we’ve already seen many scenes from the celebrations from Instagram stories and videos on Twitter.

So, after some digging, these are some of our favorite parts of Draymond Green’s wedding.

The guests (and their photos)

Draymond Green and Hazel Renee’s wedding had a star-studded guest list. But of course, we didn’t expect any less from a four-time NBA champion. If you follow any of the NBA players who attended the wedding on Instagram, you’ve likely seen their photos over the weekend.

And the photos were iconic.

Draymond posted this same photo on his Instagram story the other day with a message for Lebron James saying, “Thank you my king for making my wedding 10x better. Love you 4L @kingjames.”

Also, does anybody recognize the face (or half a face, rather) that Steph Curry is covering?

We know for sure it isn’t Jayson Tatum because he’s got his own set of photos with his fellow NBA stars too.

But of all the photos, this next one may be our favorite.

Twelve NBA championship rings among the three men in this photo. That’s power right there. Plus, we love Steph’s huge smile.

Okay seriously, whoever Draymond Green hired to take these photos, we need their contact info ASAP. The photos alone make the wedding look like it was a mad good time, but we know for sure that this was only one corner of the whole party.

And the rest of the party looked like loads of fun too.

The music (and the dancing)

Not only did Draymond Green’s wedding have a star-studded guest list, but he also had some big-name artists as performers. Again, we didn’t expect anything less from the Golden State Warrior.

One of their performers was rapper DaBaby.

In only a 22-second video, DaBaby looked like he brought the house down with his performance. I mean, did you see Draymond and Hazel on the dancefloor? If the bride wasn’t in a wedding dress, I probably wouldn’t have guessed that this was a wedding reception at all.

The Greens definitely went major at their party—as they should!

But the party went even more major when Roddy Ricch joined in too.

We’re having a good time just watching these videos. We can’t even imagine what it must have been like to be there in person. But, Lebron James and Mav Carter showed us just how much of a good time they were having on the dancefloor.

If only the NBA players could also be the performers at halftime.

The ring

Of course, we can’t go without mentioning the beautiful ring on Hazel Renee’s finger. Even in poorly lit photos, you can still see the ring clear as day. But with the price that Draymond paid for the ring, you’d expect no less.

$300,000 is equivalent to about PHP 16,761,150.

All in all, the Greens definitely threw one of the best weddings of the year, and they looked like they enjoyed the whole thing themselves as well. And amidst all the trade rumors and off-season drama, the NBA stars must have enjoyed a stress-free evening with good friends, good music, and a good time.

How much is it to watch Serena Williams play one last time?

By Annika Caniza - August 16, 2022

Last week, Serena Williams announced that she would be bidding tennis farewell. She did not want to call it a retirement, but in essence, that is what it is. And in her announcement, she suggested that this year’s US Open would be her final tournament.

This created a lot of buzz in the tennis community. Not only is one of the biggest tennis stars exiting the sport, but the US Open is also a special place for Williams. After all, it is where she earned her first Grand Slam title in 1999.

Naturally, after her announcement in Vogue, fans began clamoring for tickets. Sales went up drastically, and as a result, so did the prices.

So, how much would it cost to watch the great Serena Williams play one last time?

Spoiler alert: it’s expensive.

Hopping on a flight

Serena’s announcement did not give much leeway for fans to plan a trip to the US Open. The tournament starts on August 29, only two weeks from now. So you can expect booking a flight will be more pricey than usual.

If you were to book a flight for August 28 to get you there a day before the opening matches, it would cost anywhere between $1,500 to $10,175.

In Philippine Pesos, that amounts to roughly around PHP 82,500 to PHP 567,770 for a round-trip ticket, depending on the airline you take.

Flight prices alone, you might already be debating in your head whether seeing Serena Williams is worth that much. And if it is, let’s add up how much your accommodations might cost.

Checking into your hotel

The great thing about New York is that there are many options for accommodations. You could book a hotel, rent an apartment, or book an Airbnb. But, for the sake of simplicity, let’s see how much a hotel would cost.

Although New York City is one of the most expensive cities in the world, one of its perks is its transportation system. With the subway at your disposal, the options for hotels are much wider because you could virtually stay anywhere depending on how much you’d be willing to spend.

With all the hotels around the city, your hotel could cost around $100 to $300 per night for a decent hotel, depending on its location.

The entire US Open lasts from August 29 to September 11, so if you were to hypothetically stay until the finals, that would be 14 nights.

For 14 nights, that may come out to around $1,400 to $4,200. That’s equivalent to about PHP 78,115 to PHP 234,347.

So, is seeing Serena Williams worth that much to you?

Your ticket into the US Open

Ever since Serena Williams’ announcement that she would be bidding farewell to tennis, the demand and prices of tickets have been going up. As a result, more and more people have been buying tickets even with no guarantee where Williams will be playing.

While we know for sure that the 23-time Grand Slam champion will be competing at the US Open, the draw ceremony is still set for August 25. Until then, we won’t know what session and what court Williams will be playing in for sure.

But as it stands right now, ticket prices for the first round, both men & women, range from around $48 to $200 depending on the stadium and the session. However, these prices are expected to go higher once the draw has been announced.

But, in a best-case scenario, if you do pay for a ticket for $48 right now and it does so happen to be the match, then you’d only be paying around PHP 2,700 for a ticket to see Serena Williams. Not a bad deal if you’re willing to bank on a gamble.

And, if you’re willing to gamble as early as now that Serena is going all the way to the finals, tickets to the final match start around $160, equivalent to about PHP 8,929.

But if you ask us, if you’re going to be paying for two weeks in New York City, why not watch the finals anyway, right?

Your total bill…

In total, your bill could come out to around PHP 163,315 to PHP 811,050 depending on the specific combination of flights, hotels, and tickets you get.

So you tell us: is seeing the 23-time Grand Slam champion play one last time live worth that much to you?

Take Me Out to the Ball Game: Your Guide to Live Baseball

By Annika Caniza - August 16, 2022

Baseball is an underrated sport in the Philippines, but watching live might get you hooked. Here are some tips for your day at the ballpark.

In the movie Moneyball, Billy Beane asks in one scene, “How can you not be romantic about baseball?” I find myself asking the same question from time to time.

There’s so much to enjoy in baseball games that don’t actually have very much to do with the game itself. There’s the food, the drinks, the crowds—the whole nine yards.

So if you ever find yourself in a ballpark, be it here or in some other country, here are three tips to get the most out of your day at the beautiful ball game.

Tip #1: Don’t worry about the seats

The great thing about watching baseball live is that all the seats offer you unique experiences in watching the game.

The view of the baseball field at Coors Field
The view from my seat at Coors Field.
LA Dodger Gavin Lux
LA Dodger Gavin Lux on the field before the game.

When I watched the Colorado Rockies in Coors Field, my seats were on the first level. The best part about sitting in these seats is that you get really close to the players, so I’d recommend this if you’re watching your favorite team.

But on the other hand, you don’t get to see all the movement around the baseball diamond as well because you’re sitting relatively low in the stadium.

The view of the baseball field at Yankee Stadium
My view at Yankee Stadium.

Watching the New York Yankees in Yankee Stadium, I got seats on the second level. This one is a good in-between because you’re still close enough to see the players pretty well, but at the same time, you get to see more of the entire field.

The view of the baseball field at Fenway Park
My view at Fenway Park.

Going to Fenway Park, the home of the Boston Red Sox, we got to sit in the seats all the way in the outfield. You get to see the outfielders real close, but you’re pretty distant from the diamond.

But even so, having this full view of the field with Fenway’s classic architecture was a great experience.

So no matter where your seat is, no matter what your budget, you’re still guaranteed to have an awesome time.

Tip #2: Come on an empty stomach

When people think of watching baseball live, a lot of them are drawn to one aspect of it: the food.

That’s because the food at baseball games is a huge part of the experience. They have hotdogs, sausages, steak sandwiches, milkshakes, ice cream, and cold beer. Watching baseball live is sometimes just like being at a picnic with a baseball game in the background.

Here are some of the best things I tried.

Baseball game ice cream at Yankee Stadium.
The ice cream at Yankee Stadium. I kept the cap!
Fenway Park sandwich at the baseball game.
The steak sandwich at Fenway Park.

The truth is, baseball can be unpredictable because sometimes, you don’t know if you’re going to only see one player score the entire nine innings. But the food makes the entire thing a lot more fun, regardless of the scoreboard.

Tip #3: Bring your friends (or make new ones)

In comparison to most other sports, baseball is a slow game. There are a lot of pauses in between pitches, batting changes, and innings. This is why a lot of people do find watching baseball relatively boring.

But trust me, it’s a great experience to share with your friends. And if your friends can’t make it, make friends with the fans cheering around you.

I brought my sister to the ball game. She is now a baseball fan too.

Toasting to a great play and trash-talking the other team with buddies makes the game a whole lot more exciting, even for a slower-paced game like baseball.

And here’s a pro-tip: if you’re a baseball fan, it’s a plus to bring a friend who isn’t one. In case of an exciting game, they won’t mind missing the action to buy you some snacks.

Baseball is truly a great game to watch live, and in our country, it’s pretty underrated. But the best part is you don’t need to be a die-hard baseball fan to enjoy the view, the food, and the company around you. And those things might just be the parts of the game that get you hooked.

The Michael Jordan jerseys we wish we could bid on

By Annika Caniza - August 16, 2022

The Last Dance jersey worn by Michael Jordan in the 1993 NBA Championships is being auctioned off. But it isn’t his first to go for millions.

A few days ago, it was announced that a Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls jersey will be put up at an auction.

The jersey in question was worn by the NBA champion in Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals. Many refer to it as “The Last Dance” Jersey, as the 1997-1998 season marked Jordan’s last NBA championship. And as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, it’s no wonder the jersey is expected to go for $5 million.

But this isn’t the first time something of the NBA star’s was auctioned off for a buttload of money. So let’s throw it back to other MJ jerseys that we wish we could have bid for.

University of North Carolina jersey

Let’s start off with an obvious one. His University of North Carolina jersey.

Michael Jordan’s UNC days are where it all began for the basketball legend. He was awarded the Atlantic Coast Confrence freshman of the year, and in 1982, he made the game-winning shot for the NCAA Championship.

He had a successful run with UNC, many fans deciding that this was his jumping-off point into stardom. So, after he went on to win six NBA championships, his UNC-blue jersey became a piece of history.

And one of these pieces of history was auctioned off last year.

The 1983 University of North Carolina jersey worn by Michael Jordan himself was auctioned off for $1.38 million. Jordan wore this jersey on the March 1983 cover of the Sporting News when he was named the best player in the NCAA. So yes, it’s valuable.

At the time of the sale, it was the highest-priced sale of a Jordan jersey ever. But with the Last Dance jersey up for $5 million, that may soon change.

Space Jam jersey

The jerseys that athletes wear in games certainly go for a lot of money, even if the game in question took place in a cartoon world.

One of the best Michael Jordan moves happened on a fictional basketball court—when he stretched his arm so far out to make a game-winning shot in the movie Space Jam. I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

But in all seriousness, Space Jam is an iconic movie. His Airness playing basketball with the Looney Toons against a group of aliens? What’s not to love?

And while the TuneSquad jersey he wore while filming didn’t go for quite as much as his UNC jersey and his Bulls jersey, it still had a starting bid of $10,000 when it went up for auction in 2015.

Whoever bought this must have had plenty to talk about on Halloween that year.

Minor League Baseball jersey

Another Michael Jordan jersey that went up for bidding (and my personal favorite) is his Minor League Baseball jersey. The whole leaving-the-NBA-team-to-chase-his-childhood-baseball-dream thing was honestly an iconic moment for MJ.

For those of you who may not know, after Jordan secured a three-peat with the Chicago Bulls, winning the 1991, 1992, and 1993 NBA championships, he retired from the NBA to pursue baseball. It shocked the entire basketball community.

His late father had always pictured the basketball star as a baseball player, so we can understand the decision. So through the 1993-1994 NBA season, MJ was MIA playing with the Minor League Baseball team of the Chicago White Sox.

Playing for the Birmingham Barons, he recorded three home runs, 51 runs batted in, and 30 stolen bases. Not bad for an NBA player, if you ask me. His stolen bases were the second-most on the team.

But, his time in baseball was very short-lived. In 1995, MJ made his return to the Chicago Bulls.

Having only played in the minor leagues for a very short while, his baseball jerseys are as rare as they come. And a few have hit the auction market, with one of his 1994 jerseys going for nearly $19,000.

With all of Jordan’s pieces that have been auctioned, it’s clear that he can do just about anything. Basketball, baseball, acting—you name it. Lebron is now only a minor league team behind.

After Winning the PVL again, Creamline Heads for AVC Cup

By Annika Caniza - August 16, 2022

The Creamline Cool Smashers have dominated the local volleyball scene. Now, the Philippines hopes they do the same in the upcoming AVC Cup.

Last Sunday, women’s volleyball team, the Creamline Cool Smashers beat KingWhale Taipei in the final match of the PVL Invitational. The win marks their second for the Premier Volleyball League, after also winning the PVL Open Conference earlier this year.

With their successive wins, the Cool Smashers have proven themselves as the strongest squad in the Philippines. So, with their Invitational win, the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) requested the team to represent the country in the upcoming Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Cup for Women.

With the AVC Cup starting this Sunday, August 21, Creamline is going to need all the support they can get, especially on home turf. And since we don’t want anyone with FOMO, here’s what you need to know.

ICYMI

We’re gonna get you up to speed.

The Creamline Cool Smashers have been having a cracking year. In this year’s PVL Open Conference, the team went undefeated throughout the preliminary rounds, the quarterfinals, and the semifinals. In the finals against the Petro Gazz Angels, the Creamline Cool Smashers swept their opponents in two matches. The Open Conference title marked their fourth PVL win.

A few months later, the PVL held its second conference of the year: the PVL Invitational. Seven out of the eight teams invited to compete in the tournament were teams already in the country’s professional volleyball league, including the Open Conference finalists, the Petro Gazz Angels. The only guest club was KingWhale Taipei.

In the preliminary round of the tournament, the Creamline Cool Smashers went up against their familiar opponents, only losing to the Cignal HD Spikers.

But, KingWhale Taipei proved to be a surprising addition to the tournament for Creamline as they served them their first and only loss in the semifinal round. The team from Taipei went undefeated, and both teams faced again in the final round.

But you already know how that went. Again, Creamline redeemed themselves after a 3-2 loss to sweep KingWhale Taipei 3-0 in the winner-takes-all match.

The Cool Smashers still remain the queens of Philippine volleyball. And as such, they will be repping the country in the upcoming AVC Cup taking place right here.

Don’t get FOMO

The Asian Women’s Volleyball Cup, also known as the AVC Cup for Women, is an international volleyball tournament that started in 2008. Since its inaugural year, the biennial competition has had six editions, this year marking its seventh.

Through the years, a total of twelve teams have entered the tournament. The Philippines has entered only twice thus far, finishing ninth in 2018 and qualifying in 2022. The 2020 edition was canceled due to the pandemic.

Although the tournament kicks off in the PhilSports Arena on August 21, Creamline is still set to announce its roster for the competition. But, we do know the countries our team ill be up against in the preliminary rounds.

The Philippines is part of pool A of the competition, slated to face China, Iran, South Korea, and Vietnam. On the other hand, pool B consists of teams from Australia, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Kazakhstan, and Thailand. Among the countries we are set to face, China may prove to be the toughest, as they are the winningest team in the history of the AVC Cup.

But, as only the country’s second time entering the tournament, Creamline will be looking to redeem the Philippines’ ninth-place finish from their maiden appearance in the Cup. And with their recent wins and their talented roster, they have a good chance of doing exactly that.

The Philippines has not won a gold medal for indoor volleyball since the 1993 Southeast Asian Games, so a win from this competition would definitely mean a lot to the country, the athletes, and the local sports community as a whole.

Emma Raducanu sweeps Serena Williams at the Cincinnati Open

By Annika Caniza - August 16, 2022

19-year-old Emma Raducanu showed up the 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams in the Cincinnati Open. And we are so here for it.

Though not a major Grand Slam, all eyes were on the Cincinnati Open. The attention was hot after the tournament draw brought Emma Raducanu and Serena Williams together in the opening round.

Both Raducanu and Williams are Grand Slam champions, though from different generations. The Brit only has one Grand Slam title to the American’s 23. And yet, Raducanu put up a heated fight against Williams in the opening round of the Cincinnati Open.

And, it certainly seemed like a tougher fight than Williams might have been anticipating, as Raducanu won in two straight sets. She knocked the veteran out in just barely over an hour, winning 6-4, 6-0.

Keeping the great Serena Williams at bay

As we mentioned, the two players are from two different generations. Emma Raducanu is only 19 years old and has just begun shining in the tennis arena. Meanwhile, Serena Williams is 40 years old and on the brink of her retirement.

And even though every veteran athlete knows that there will eventually come a time when the young guns will start showing them up, it’s hard to imagine that the fierce Serena Williams thought that would be today.

Throughout the (albeit, short) match Williams never fully seemed to find momentum in her game. Her backhands lacked delivery and many of Raducanu’s points were easy takes. But, that isn’t to say that she did not put up a fight. Her forehand shots delivered and were her strongest asset in the match.

When the 23-time champion was down 4-1 in the first set, Williams was able to take control, bringing the deficit down to two games, ending the set in 6-4. It didn’t seem like a huge difference, and many fans expected her to make a comeback in the second set.

But much to their disappointment, Raducanu rallied even harder the second time around. Throughout the entire second set, the Brit took away any of Williams’ chances of building momentum. Proving that the court was hers, she didn’t let the veteran win a single game, finishing it quickly with a 6-0 set.

In the post-match interview, Raducanu expressed that she was nervous “from the first point to the last point.” But, from anyone else’s perspective, it only looked like confidence.

After the match, the 19-year-old US Open champion expressed her sentiments in getting to play with one of tennis’ biggest names.

What does this mean for Williams’ retirement?

Last week, Serena Williams announced that she would be bidding tennis farewell soon, leading us to believe that this year’s US Open may be her final appearance.

As her swansong from the sport that she has dedicated her entire life to, hopes were high that she might end her career on a high. But, if the Cincinnati Open has shown us anything, it’s that she may be in for more of a challenge than we anticipated.

From 2007 to 2019, Williams never saw a year without at least one Grand Slam finals appearance. But, her last Grand Slam was over five years ago at the 2017 Australian Open and her last finals match was in the 2019 US Open.

With nearly three years since her last finals appearance, it may be a long shot to see Williams in the finals again this year. Not to mention the fierce competition in women’s tennis now.

Depending on how the rest of the Cincinnati Open shakes out, we may have a few names as favorites to win the US Open starting later this month. But one thing is for sure: Serena Williams has her work cut out for her.

And of course, we know that Emma Raducanu will be chasing her second Grand Slam title too.

Is anyone else hoping to see a rematch between these two in New York?

Jalen Green in MNL: Highlights from the JG4 Manila Tour

By Annika Caniza - August 15, 2022

Jalen Green just spent the last weekend in the Philippines. We’ve got all the highlights of the JG4 Manila Tour right here.

We don’t know what you did over the weekend, but we certainly know what NBA player Jalen Green was up to. Thanks to adidas Philippines, the country was graced by his presence for a few days.

From Friday to Sunday, the Houston Rockets player was in the Philippines, playing games, immersing himself in our culture, and learning about the country first-hand.

This was all part of adidas Philippines’ JG4 Manila Tour. Although we know it was an exclusive event, we’ve got the highlights of the entire weekend here for you.

Chatting with Jalen

One of the best parts of the JG4 Manila Tour was getting face time with an NBA rising star like Jalen Green. Throughout his stay, lucky guests were given the chance to learn more about the Houston Rockets guard.

The JG4 Manila Tour marked Green’s third time visiting the country, and from the sounds of it, it may not be his last. “It feels great to come back as an NBA player,” he shared, “I love it. It’s the best out here. I can’t get enough of it.”

We loved hearing Green’s warm words for the country. But our favorite part of getting to witness the basketball player was when host, DJ Suzy, had him translate a series of Tagalog words.

And he certainly impressed the crowd with how many words he was able to translate, like masaya (happy), buhok (hair), takbo (run), and yakap (hug).

But it wasn’t just Jalen treating us with his stories, his knowledge of Filipino culture, and his personality. Apart from all that, the Filipino crowd themselves were able to treat Jalen too.

Treating Jalen

In the One of One Tribute – Manila Culture Experience that adidas Philippines hosted as part of the JG4 Manila Tour, Jalen Green got to immerse himself in some aspects of Filipino street culture.

The adidas Philippines team had a lot in store for Jalen. The Manila Culture Experience featured rows of sports cars, a streetball court surrounded by graffiti, and a mural made by Quiccs and Egg Fiasco. Plus, they even treated Jalen to a joy ride in a customized JG4 sports car.

If you ask us, it certainly looked like the NBA player fit right into the Filipino street culture.

But apart from adidas Philippines’ art installations, car collections, and sneaker talks for Jalen Green, the visitors there to see him were able to treat him with gifts of their own as well.

“I just come out here, get so much love, so much attention, and so many gifts,” Jalen expressed last Friday, “it’s really a blessing.”

Playing with Jalen

Of course, as an NBA player, Jalen Green had to play some basketball while in Manila. So, the day after the One of One Tribute, the adidas One Basketball team got the chance to play with the shooting guard.

And we’re sure that there must have been some fighting over who would get to guard the six-foot-four shooter.

With the open run, a select group of people was lucky enough to witness Jalen Green’s skills on the court with their own eyes. And rumor has it, he doesn’t disappoint.

But, even though the open run with Green looked enviable, we’re still partial to the game he played in Ilocos Sur.

Exploring his heritage

The JG4 Manila Tour capped off with a visit to his mother’s home province, Ilocos Sur. But even though it was just a short trip, the adidas Philippines team was able to make it as special as they could.

First, they took Jalen on a heritage walk in Calle Cirsologo, Vigan. This is his mother’s hometown, and it was the NBA player’s first time getting to see the sights in person.

Plus, he did it in style.

While on this tour, Jalen was even treated to the famous Ilocos empanada from Casa Jardin Empanada. And having Filipino food is one of the player’s favorite things to do while in the Philippines.

“The food is amazing. I can’t complain about the food. Any good food is good food,” he shared.

After Green was able to enjoy himself learning more about his heritage, he was able to give back to the community as well. Adidas Philippines held a short basketball clinic on one of the community basketball courts.

Giving back

Here, Jalen Green was able to play with the kids of the community, showcase his skills, and gift the kids with apparel and basketballs.

Our hearts melted at the sight of these aspiring basketball players getting a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play with an NBA star.

While in Manila, he expressed his belief in hard work that these kids take with them as guidance. “Anybody can get into the NBA. All around the world, it’s a worldwide league. You just have to put your mind into it, stick to the grind, don’t lose yourself in it because you have a tough day or you feel nothing’s going your way.”

Of all the amazing things that the JG4 Manila Tour brought us, this one definitely stands out. And while we enjoyed having Jalen Green in town over the weekend, we’re equally excited to see him continue growing in the NBA, representing the Filipino people.
