Alex Eala pulled a quick upset over Leyre Romero Gormaz at the W60 tournament in Slovakia, winning 6-1, 6-0 to reach the second round.
Junior Grand Slam Champion Alex Eala has put herself back in the win column with a quick win over Spain’s Leyre Romero Gormaz, who entered the W60 Slovakia as the sixth seed of the tournament.
The last time the Filipino and the Spaniard met was nearly three years ago at the 2020 Roland Garros Junior Championships, where Eala emerged victorious to reach the quarterfinals.
Now, facing each other once again on the pro circuit, Eala again found her stride to break into the second round of the W60 Slovakia, winning in two quick sets, 6-1, 6-0.
This win marks a major upset over Gormaz, who was the sixth seed of the tournament, and who holds a rank of World No. 176. In comparison, Alex Eala currently holds a WTA ranking of World No. 220.
This year, Eala has already been making strides in her professional career. This marks her second ITF event of the year, and to start 2023, she also competed in the Australian Open qualifiers and the Thailand Open for the first time.
With her victory over Gormaz, Eala will be moving on to the Round of 16, where she will be facing 21-year-old Sonay Kartal from Great Britain, ranked World No. 262.
