Junior Grand Slam champion Alex Eala enters the semifinals of the W80 Poitiers tournament in France after beating Ana Konjuh, 6-2, 6-3.
In her previous match, she pulled an upset, winning against the tournament’s eighth seed, Vitalia Diatchenko. The Russian player also ranks as World No. 107 on the WTA Rankings. Comparatively, Eala is currently at her career-best WTA No. 248.
Today marked her second quarterfinal appearance in an $80,000 tournament. And now, she will be advancing to the next round in France this weekend—another milestone reached.
Another upset
Ana Konjuh has reached a career-high WTA singles ranking of 20th in the world and currently sits at 153rd. But it was 17-year-old tennis ace Alex Eala who took control of the first set, ending it quickly, 6-2.
The second set saw a back-and-forth between both players, as they continued to match each other point for point, set for set, until they were tied with three sets apiece. Finally, it was Eala who emerged with the advantage, winning the next three in a row to end the match 6-2, 6-3.
With the victory over an opponent seven years her senior, the Filipino advances to the semifinal of the tournament—her first semifinal appearance in an $80,000 tournament.
