You heard it here first! An MVP in the global music industry, Billboard is coming to the Philippines as the newest player in local media.
Whether you’re an athlete, a sports fan, or a fitness enthusiast, music is most likely a big part of your passions, as sports and music have long had a deep connection with each other. So, with the arrival of the Philippine media industry’s newest player, this connection is something that is bound to deepen, especially on a local scale.
Billboard, a big name in the global music industry, and voice of authority among artists and fans, is set to launch Billboard Philippines with Modern Media Group Inc. (MMGI) of AGC Power Holdings Corp. (AGC PHC) in October 2023.
This new edition marks the continued global expansion of the brand alongside Billboard China, Japan, Argentina, Vietnam, Italy, and Georgia.
“AGC PHC has decided to bring Billboard to the Philippines to fill a gap in the local media industry,” said Archie Carrasco, CEO of AGC PHC. “Billboard’s expertise in music, coupled with our local knowledge and resources, will allow us to create unique content and showcase talent to help take Filipino music to the next level.”
“Billboard’s DNA is very much aligned with the Filipino’s deeply rooted love for music,” said Anne Bernisca, COO of MMGI. “It’s about time we shine a spotlight on our local artists and bring OPM to a wider, global audience.”
Champions of the industry
Billboard has long been recognized as the trusted voice of authority in music charts, reviews, events, trends, news, and information related to the music industry, which expands into many other industries as well, such as the world of sports.
Sports and music have always been deeply intertwined with one another. In fact, Billboard has featured many athletes as music artists in the past, such as NBA stars Shaquille O’Neal, Damian Lillard, Tony Parker, and even Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao. With this relationship between these two big industries, we can also expect that the Philippine edition of the global music brand will bring the same kinds of crossovers in our local landscape into the spotlight.
Further, Billboard Philippines will feature diverse music-related topics with a heavy emphasis on local talent, publishing magazines in addition to showcasing immersive events, concerts, podcasts, and unforgettable music collaborations that will complement the traditional print and digital magazine formats.
On top of this, fans can also look forward to seeing local iterations or similar campaigns such as their well-known charts, including Billboard 100, 21 Under 21, and Women in Music.
Billboard Philippines will give a platform to the country’s vast pool of musical talent. Today, more and more Filipino artists are being recognized on the global stage. Additionally, the Filipino edition will cover an eclectic array of musical genres including the soulful beats and rhythmic lyrics of urban OPM, acoustic-based arrangements of Pinoy folk-pop, catchy novelty songs, powerful hooks of Filipino rock, and many more with musicians from all over the archipelago being heard, valued, and celebrated.
“We are absolutely thrilled to bring Billboard to the Philippines, a nation with a rich history of music and an ever-growing passion for the art form,” said Mike Van, President of Billboard.
“We are excited to contribute to the vibrant music scene in the Philippines by sharing its stories, talents, and achievements with the rest of the world. Our expansion into the Philippine market presents an incredible opportunity to connect with a new audience and to further our mission of providing the most comprehensive and insightful coverage of the music industry worldwide. We believe that our presence in the Philippines will help to foster a new era of creativity, collaboration, and success for the music industry in the region and beyond.”
