Carlos Yulo sets sights on 4 finals in World Championships

By Annika Caniza - November 02, 2022

In his bid to qualify yet again for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Carlos Yulo is showing his determination in this year’s Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.

After winning the gold medal for the men’s floor exercise in the All-Japan Seniors Championships (and sustaining a minor hand injury), five-time World Championship medalist Carlos Yulo is back in the running for more medals in the tournament.

Following a successful run at the qualification events in the tournament last November 1 (Philippine time), Yulo is gearing up to compete in the final rounds of four events.

With four medals on the line, this could potentially be the Filipino’s best performance in the World Championships yet.

A strong start

Carlos Yulo had a strong start at the qualifying phase of the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, and it came as no surprise. After competing in all six apparatuses, he advances to four final events: the all-around, floor exercise, vault, and parallel bars.

At these events, Filipino Olympian finished in third place in the all-around, ranked fourth in parallel bars, was second in the vault, and first for the floor exercise. Additionally, he also managed to qualify as a reserve in the rings after finishing in 10th place.

As for his other events, he finished 31st in the horizontal bar and 102nd in the pommel horse. His entire performance makes him the third-highest qualifier in the tournament.

In his last World Championships appearance, Yulo won the gold medal for the vault and a silver medal for the parallel bars. But for the event he’s most well-known for, the floor exercise, he only managed to finish in fifth. This year, he will be looking for redemption.

Already topping the floor exercise event once before, in 2019, Yulo will be giving his best this year to take the title back, making sure to strive for more in the finals.

The Men’s All-Around finals are set to take place on November 4, while the Men’s Apparatus finals are scheduled for November 5.

Ahead of the finals, Yulo shared in an interview with the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, ā€œIā€™m going to try to beat what I did today, to be more aggressive.ā€
