All eyes have been on Cristiano Ronaldo lately—so much so that he has hit 500 million followers on Instagram.
Cristiano Ronaldo is one of, if not the most popular athlete in the world, and the most successful. He has won major titles for every football club that he has played for, including the iconic Manchester United and Real Madrid.
Currently, he is playing in his fifth, and what will likely be his final World Cup. With this, all eyes have been on the Portuguese player recently.
Perhaps this is one reason why Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first person in history to reach 500 million followers on Instagram.
The center of attention
Football is the most popular sport in the world, so it’s no wonder that the athletes who excel in this sport are just as big of celebrities as actors, artists, and models. On Instagram, Lionel Messi also has 376 million followers, and David Beckham has 75.8 million.
But Ronaldo is now millions above.
Another possible reason that the Manchester United player now has more followers than ever could be because of the recent controversy surrounding him. In an interview he gave with Piers Morgan, he spoke openly about his recent experiences at the club and some of his former teammates—not all of it positive (to say the least).
With this, speculation over his future at Manchester United has been circulating. Now, all eyes are on him as we await what the next step of his aging career might look like.
But in the meantime, the 37-year-old has a World Cup to focus on. And perhaps becoming the first person to reach 500 million followers on Instagram may just offer him the boost of confidence he needs ahead of his first match.
