With a victory at the Orlen Cup, EJ Obiena claimed his second gold in the span of seven days to extend his ongoing medal streak.
The Filipino pole vaulting sensation successfully defended his Orlen Cup crown as he cleared 5.77 meters to win the tournament in his second straight year.
With his performance, the Filipino Olympian defeated former world champion, Sam Kendricks, who cleared 5.70 meters. Obiena came out victorious over nine other athletes.
“Happy to take the win🥇 here today in Łódź @orlencup. It was a difficult battle, both physically and mentally,” Obiena wrote on his Instagram after the tournament.
The World No. 3’s victory marks his second gold medal in four tournaments and his fourth podium finish overall. In his last competition a few days ago, he finished third in the Mondo Classic in Sweden after meeting his personal and the Philippine record of 5.91 meters.
Following this victory, he will rest and recover in preparation for the upcoming Copernicus Cup on February 8.
