Filipina billiards player Rubilen Amit wins TOWNS award for sports

By Annika Caniza - September 30, 2022

Rubilen Amit is one of the Philippines’ most decorated athletes. As a professional billiards player, she has competed in and won many international and other major tournaments throughout her career.

And to celebrate her successes as a national athlete, she received the honor of becoming one of The 11 Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service (TOWNS) of 2022.

The TOWNS Awards

The very first TOWNS awards were given back in 1974. Ever since, the awardees took over the search for future awardees and in 1993, they established the TOWNS Foundation.

Now, the Foundation holds the triennial search for its awardees. Subsequently, awardees then become part of the organization, where they have projects that aim to uplift the quality of life in the country and contribute to national development.

TOWNS awardees are women who show dedication and talent, and as the name suggests, have brought service to the country.

This year, the Foundation named 11 incredible women on this year’s list. And part of the 2022 awardees was Rappler journalist Pia Ranada, environmentalist Anna Oposa Del Rosario, and Billiards World Champion Rubilen Amit.

A deserving awardee

Rubilen Amit is one of the country’s most distinguished athletes. And, the TOWNS Foundation recognized that.

In a statement from the organization, they wrote, “Anyone familiar with the world of cue sports knows how Rubilen Amit, other than winning world championships in billiards, has been consistently voted as the most respected and appreciated participant in world events.”

Amit has truly been an exceptional athlete her whole career. Representing the Philippines, she has won 10 gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games.

But, most notably, she won the WPA Women’s World Ten-ball Championship in 2009 and 2013. She became the first Filipino woman to win the world title.

“I am truly honored to be receiving this prestigious award. I am humbled to be included among these strong and amazing women! Congratulations to my fellow awardees,” the champion posted on her Facebook page.

Without a doubt, our national athletes have brought tremendous pride to the country, Rubilen Amit one of them. As such, she is certainly deserving to receive one of the TOWNS Awards this year.
