After a goal-filled run in the first round of the Paris 2024 Qualifiers, the Filipinas remain in contention for an Olympic berth.
Over the past several days, the Philippine Women’s National Football Team, better known as the Filipinas, has been on a dominant run at the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifiers.
The Filipinas opened the tournament with a statement 8-0 win over Tajikistan, and continued on their goal-filled run with a 4-0 victory over Pakistan.
The final match on deck for the Philippine side for the first round of the tournament was a match against Hong Kong.
Similar to the Filipinas, Hong Kong also won their first two matches of the tournament against the same two teams. This placed them at par with the Philippines with six points, but the Philippines came into their matchup on top of the table on goal difference, with 12 goals to Hong Kong’s five.
Facing Hong Kong to cap off the first round, the Filipinas closed the match in the same forceful fashion — with a 4-0 win.
Sarina Bolden opened the scoreline for the Philippines with an early goal five minutes into the match and later scored a second 41 minutes in. Meryll Serrano closed the first half with a goal in the 44th minute.
The second half saw another early goal, with Quinley Quezada putting one to the back of the net at minute 53.
Overall, this has been a highly successful run for the Philippine team and proves why they were the highest-ranked team among the three other nations in their table, as they currently sit at their best rank of 49th in the world.
With this victory, the Filipinas will be advancing to the second round of the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifiers, where they will be joining top-ranked teams including Australia, Japan, China, South Korea, and North Korea.
