Professional footballer Sandro Reyes becomes the first Filipino-born athlete to play in the German league, 2. Bundesliga.
Filipino football player Sandro Reyes just announced a huge milestone in his career.
From kicking off his professional career with the Azkals Development Team, playing in the Philippines Football League, and representing the country at international tournaments, Reyes is moving across the world to take his talents to 2. Bundesliga for Greuther Fürth.
“Past couple football years haven’t been the smoothest but hours of work every single day, faith in God’s will, and of course positivity and optimism always in between kept me going through my rough football days,” Reyes shared on his Instagram.
2. Bundesliga is the second division of professional football in Germany, one league below the Bundesliga, where Greuther Fürth competes.
Spielvereinigung Greuther Fürth is a football club based in Fürth, Bavaria.
The team used to play in the Bundesliga, but after facing relegation in the 2021-2022 season, they are now competing for their way back to the top.
They are currently 11th in the 2. Bundesliga standings, seven points behind the top club.
His mentor at ADT, Stephan Schröck, also used to play for Greuther Fürth from 2001 to 2004. However, Sandro Reyes becomes the first Filipino-born footballer to play in the German league.
Growing up, Reyes was already among the most talented Filipino football players. At the age of nine, he started playing for FCB Escola, a youth academy of FC Barcelona.
Now, after just a couple of years playing professionally on Filipino soil, the 19-year-old is headed back to Europe to advance his career.
