From FIFA to EA SPORTS FC: What to Know About the Football Game’s New Era

By Annika Caniza - June 07, 2023
EA SPORTS FC marks a new era for the world’s favorite football game — here’s everything you need to know about it.

When most people use or hear the term ‘FIFA’, more often than not, they are likely referring to the game rather than the international football federation. This is because through the years, the name ‘FIFA’ has become more known as the iconic football game franchise that fans look forward to every year.

However, as it turns out, FIFA 23 was the last installment of the FIFA-branded installment from game creators EA Sports, and instead of counting down to FIFA 24, this year, fans will instead be looking forward to the launch of a “new” title: EA SPORTS FC.

Here’s what you need to know about the new face of the beloved football game.

Why are they replacing FIFA?

Game developers, EA Sports, announced last year that they would be ending their three-decade-long partnership with the world football governing body, FIFA. And losing this partnership, of course, means losing the name.

“After nearly 30 years of creating genre-defining interactive football experiences, we will soon begin an exciting new era,” Executive Vice President Cam Weber shared in a statement last year.

“Next year, EA SPORTS FC will become the future of football from EA SPORTS.”

Given that EA Sports has ended its partnership with FIFA, many fans have been wondering if the game developers will still have the licenses to feature the same teams and players in the rebranded EA SPORTS FC.

The simple answer is yes. It was confirmed that the majority of the official leagues still remain in partnership with EA Sports as they enter this new chapter of the game.

Among the organizations that still remain in partnership with the media brand include the Premier League, UEFA, the Bundesliga, Serie A, LaLiga, MLS, Ligue 1, CONMEBOL, and EFL.

What game modes will be available?

The game modes that we all know and love from the famous FIFA franchise will still remain available in EA SPORTS FC.

Weber confirmed in a statement, “Everything you love about our games will be part of EA SPORTS FC — the same great experiences, modes, leagues, tournaments, clubs, and athletes will be there. Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Pro Clubs, and VOLTA Football will all be there.”

When will it be released?

Ans for the biggest question of all, when will the new face of football gaming finally be available for fans to experience?

While it is still yet to be officially confirmed, EA SPORTS FC is expected to drop sometime in August or September this year. Previous iterations of the previous franchise, such as FIFA 22 and FIFA 23, were usually launched in the final week of September, and fans are speculating that EA Sports will not veer too far off from this schedule.

And for those of you who are wondering, EA SPORTS FC will be available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

With everything that we currently know, although EA Sports’ new game is getting a new look and a new name, it seems that otherwise, EA SPORTS FC looks like it will still be the same iconic football game we all know and love.
