Rumors have long been circulating about Mick Schumacher’s future in Formula 1, especially given that his contract with Haas F1 team expires after this season.
Today, all the rumors are put to bed by Haas and Mick, as they both announce that they will be parting ways after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this season.
Firsts and Lasts
In a statement that he released on his social media platforms, Mick Schumacher shares, “This is going to be my last race with Haas F1 team. I don’t want to hide the fact that I am very disappointed about the decision not to renew our contract.”
Further, in his post, he also thanks the team for the opportunity they have given him, acknowledging that they have helped him mature in the sport.
The German joined Haas in December 2020 after winning the Formula 2 championship. Over his two seasons in F1, Schumacher reached many milestones with the American team. He scored his first F1 points this year, and he also recorded a career-best result, finishing in sixth place in Austria this year.
Haas team principal Guenther Steiner also released a statement regarding Mick’s departure from the team.
“I would like to thank Mick for his contribution to the team over the past couple of years. While choosing to go in separate directions for the future the entire team wishes Mick well for the next steps in his career path,” he says.
Just minutes after the announcement from both Mick and Haas, the American team also revealed that Nico Hülkenberg will be replacing the German in 2023.
A Familiar Face
Nico Hülkenberg made his Formula 1 debut way back in 2007 and raced in the sport until 2019. In 2020, he did not have a contract for a race seat, but he still remained close to the sport as a reserve driver for Racing Point. In 2021 and 2022, Hülkenberg signed with Aston Martin, also as a reserve and development driver.
And now, he gets his comeback with Haas for next season.
As for Mick Schumacher, we still have yet to find out what next year holds for him. But as it stands, without a seat on next year’s grid, we may have to await a similar comeback for the youngster sometime in the future.
