Philippine Blu Girls in Fight For Softball World Cup Berth

By Annika Caniza - April 04, 2023
The Philippine Women’s National Softball Team are in the hunt for a slot in the World Cup as they compete in the ongoing Softball Asia Cup.

The Philippine Women’s National Softball Team, also known as the Blu Girls, are in a tight fight in the ongoing Women’s Softball Asia Cup in South Korea — their last shot to qualify for the Women’s World Softball World Cup next year.

The Blu Girls came into the Softball Asia Cup with a strong opening, as they went on a dominant three-game win streak to build an early lead in the preliminary round standings.

However, the Philippine side was handed their first loss by Chinese Taipei, defeating the Blu Girls, 5-0, to bring their win-loss record to 3-1.

The Blu Girls still managed to come back from the loss with a big win over Singapore earlier today, 8-1, to bring their record to 4-1 with three games left to go.

How can they qualify for the World Cup?

The Women’s Softball Asia Cup is the last qualifying tournament for the XVII WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup taking place in July next year.

In the ongoing Asian tournament, all nine teams will play each other in a round-robin format for the first stage. The top four teams with the best standings after this will then advance to the semi-finals, where the fourth-placed team will place the top team, while the other two teams will face each other.

The winners will both advance to the finals of the tournament, while the losing sides will compete for the bronze medal.

At the end of the tournament, the top three teams will qualify for the Women’s Softball World Cup.

However, the World Baseball Softball Confederation also recently announced that they will be giving Asia the final wildcard slot in the World Cup as well, bringing the total number of competing Asian nations to four.

The Philippine Blu Girls qualified for the previous World Cup in 2018, finishing 14th overall. Will the team be able to secure another berth for next year?
