Just an hour ago, one of tennis’ big three, Roger Federer, announced that he will be ending his competitive career.
His post came in the form of a heartfelt and bittersweet letter, which he addresses “to my tennis family and beyond.”
In his message, he makes sure to thank everyone who has helped him throughout his incredible career. He acknowledges his family, team, sponsors, and of course, his fans.
Undoubtedly, every person he makes sure to mention is his farewell has made a mark on his 24 years in the sport.
A career like no other
For the past three years, Roger Federer has struggled with a knee injury. In his announcement post, he writes, “The past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries.”
But, the last few years of his career do not define the stellar feats he has achieved.
The Swiss is a 20-time Grand Slam champion. He won his first Grand Slam in the 2003 Wimbledon. His last was won at the 2018 Australian Open. And throughout over 24 years in the sport, he has competed in over 1,500 matches.
In that span of time, he has achieved many successes—too many to count.
Now, he is set to make his final competitive appearance at the Laver Cup next week in London.
Although this may be his swan song, his legacy is sure to live on. Even as he says goodbye to the competitive courts, he writes, “to the game of tennis: I love you and I will never leave you.”
