The World Cup is Over. What Now?

By Annika Caniza - December 21, 2022

The 2022 World Cup has been one of the most exciting sports tournaments of the year, and quite possibly, the decade, all the way from the very first match to the last. And now, after a month of nonstop football action, it feels like we’ve hit a wall.

But you’re still on a football high from that World Cup final (and if you can’t stop thinking about it like we can’t), we totally get it, and we’ve got you.

Here are four upcoming football tournaments and matches to watch out for to scratch your football itch.

Watch the Azkals at the AFF Championship.

From today, December 20 until January 2, the Philippine Men’s National Football Team, better known as the Azkals, will be competing in the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup.

The AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup is also more commonly known as the AFF Championship, a biennial football tournament hosted by the ASEAN Football Federation where 10 qualified football teams from Southeast Asia compete against each other.

The 2022 edition is already underway.

In case you missed it, last night, the Philippines lost to Cambodia, 2-3, in their first match of the Group Stage. However, there are still there more Group Stage matches to look forward to.

The Azkals will be facing Brunei on December 23 at 6:00 PM, Thailand on December 26 at 8:30 PM, and Indonesia on January 2 at 8:30 PM.

Buy tickets for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

The men’s World Cup is over. Now it’s time for the women to take the stage.

The Filipinas are the first Philippine football team to qualify for a World Cup in the sport. As such, next year’s tournament is going to be historic not just for the Filipinas, but for the entire country.

If you don’t want to miss out on what will undoubtedly be an incredible experience, match tickets are now on sale.

Next year, the Filipinas will be facing Switzerland on July 21, New Zealand on the 25th, and Norway on the 30th for the Group Stage.

Currently, FIFA is selling an allocated amount of tickets for Philippine fans. Make sure you don’t miss the cut!

But, if July is too far away for you, the Filipinas will also be competing in the Pinatar Cup in February next year, where they will be competing against highly-ranked European teams in preparation for the World Cup. Check out the details here.

Catch the PFL in action.

The Philippines Football League is currently about halfway through its ongoing season. In case you’ve been M.I.A., this is how the teams have been doing so far:

The good news is the PFL still has its second half of the season to go, leaving a lot more room for competition among the teams. Currently, Kaya FC-Iloilo is leading the standings, with United City FC just four points behind, and Dynamic Herb Cebu FC only three points off second.

With the Azkals competing in the ongoing AFF Championship, several PFL players have been called up to the training camp for the international tournament.

However, once the league kicks off once again, be sure to catch their matches on their Facebook page or better yet, live in the stadiums.

Club football is back.

Now that the World Cup is over, all the players will be heading back to their respective football clubs as the league seasons are scheduled to resume soon.

So, if you want to see more of your favorite World Cup stars, like Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Neymar, or Son Heung-min, club football is back in business. Here are the upcoming re-opening match days for some of the most popular leagues around the world:

  • Premier League (England): December 26
  • Ligue 1 (France): December 28
  • La Liga (Spain): December 28
  • Serie A (Italy): January 4
  • Bundesliga (Germany): January 20

Even though the World Cup may be over, football excitement around the world never really comes to an end. Which one are you most excited to catch?
