Volleyball Captain Aby Maraño Retires From National Team

By Annika Caniza - March 13, 2023

After 7 years, Volleyball Team Captain Aby Maraño is retiring from national team duties to make room for a new chapter.

Philippine women’s national volleyball team captain Aby Maraño announced that she is retiring from the national team on Sunday, March 12.

“Nagwakas na ang serbisyo sa bayan, dito naman, dito na lang, dito na palagi. Maraming salamat 🇵🇭 Love, Capt. Tyang,” Marano wrote on her Instagram post.

The former DLSU Lady Spiker has been one of the national team’s biggest stars for seven years.

She represented the Philippines in the last four editions of the Southeast Asian Games, as well as several other international tournaments, and she has been the team captain since 2018.

But now, the 30-year-old is ready for a new chapter in her life. “Retirement means time and space for my other passions,” Aby Maraño shared with the members of the press, discussing her retirement announcement.

Apart from making space in her own life, however, she also explained that her retirement comes as a way to make room for the younger generation to take over.

“I think oras na para sa new blood,” she said.

Of course, Maraño remains grateful for all the opportunities she has gotten from being a part of the national squad for so long, and all the people who have been with her along the way, especially as the leader of the team.

Although she is bidding her national team duties goodbye, Maraño still remains with her Premier Volleyball League Team, F2 Logistics, as they compete in the semifinals of the league’s ongoing All-Filipino Conference.
