Who’s the MJ of the motorsports world? Or the Lewis Hamilton of the NBA? Here, we give our take on F1 greats and NBA legends.
The NBA has been popular in the Philippines for many decades, while the rise in popularity of Formula 1 is relatively new — at least since it became more mainstream. This rise in popularity got me thinking about the greats of both sports and if there is a way to describe a driver with his hooper counterpart.
With this in mind, I came up with the following comparisons. The first three might seem very obvious, but the rest were a little bit more difficult.
1. Michael Jordan = Michael Schumacher
Many consider Michael Jordan and Michael Schumacher the GOATs of their respective sports. Jordan has six NBA championships and five MVP awards and has left his mark on the sport, as well as pop culture. Similarly, Schumacher has a record seven World Championships and has forever stamped his imprint on Formula 1.
Their teams, the Bulls and Ferrari, adapted to their DNA, achieving unparalleled success during their peaks. Both joined other teams (the Wizards and Mercedes) at the tail end of their careers with little success.
Known for their relentless competitiveness, exceptional skill, and ability to perform under pressure, both have massively influenced their sports, setting new standards of excellence and becoming global icons.
2. Kobe Bryant = Ayrton Senna
Kobe Bryant and Ayrton Senna are remembered not only for their incredible achievements but also for their tragic, untimely deaths.
