King’s Ransom: Carlos Yulo Wins Back To Back Olympic Golds To Finish Paris Run

24 hours later, Carlos Yulo wins another Olympic gold medal in flawless fashion.

Make that three Olympic gold medals for the Philippines.

Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo is concluding an all-time great Olympic run with two gold medals draped around his neck, following an incredible performance in the men’s vault finals at the Bercy Arena on Sunday, August 4.

In another perfect display, Yulo’s routine earned an average score of 15.116 to seal his storybook ending at the Paris Olympics. From a near miss in the Tokyo vault final, Yulo has successfully claimed the men’s vault throne on his road to redemption.

Yulo started with a Ri II on his first vault, or a handspring double front half out pike. First executed by North Korea’s Ri Se Gwang, Yulo’s take was flawless, netting him a score of 15.433 to open his bid. Broken down, it was given a 6.000 difficulty score and a 9.433 execution score.

The gymnastics star ended with a Kasamatsu double twist that earned a score of 14.800 which resulted in his final average.

Like his golden floor routine, Yulo was in a celebratory mood after. It was safe to say that he’d been confident with his vaults as he punched his arms to the sky — a sight Filipinos have gotten used to seeing — and hugged his team afterward.

Despite a late scare Croatia’s Benovic Aurel, and Tokyo bronze medalist Arthur Datyvan, no other gymnast came close to Yulo, who was just a day removed from snagging the gold medal in the floor exercise.

Once Datyvan’s vaults were done, Yulo could take a well-deserved bow in front of the cheering crowd at Bercy Arena. It’s official — Carlos Yulo is a two-time Olympic gold medalist.

Datyvan settled for silver with an average score of 14.966, while Englishman Harry Hepworth snared bronze after netting 14.949 for his two vaults.

With his Olympic run done, Carlos Yulo has written a legendary chapter in Philippine sporting history. As he leaves the Olympic mat, Yulo can do so with no regrets, having added not one, but two Olympic gold medals to his accomplishments.

No doubt that today’s triumph will lay the seeds for the next crop of Filipino sporting heroes.
