Whether you need fuel for a surf or you’re ready to cool down, Tagpuan sa San Juan’s meals are a must-try.
Over the last decade, San Juan, La Union has evolved from a hidden gem to one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations, especially among local and international surfers. Ever since its popularity has boomed, so has the local economy — restaurants, resorts, surf schools, and shops are all thriving, some even becoming well-known outside of the area. However, certain establishments are considered as San Juan staples.
One of them is Tagpuan sa San Juan.
Known as an ‘Elyu Classic’, Tagpuan has been around for quite some time now and is arguably one of the most popular restaurants in the area, especially among local surfers. Here are three reasons why.
It’s at the heart of San Juan
When you’re driving down Macarthur Highway, it might be easy to miss Tagpuan sa San Juan, as it is a small hole-in-the-wall tucked in a small side street. But that’s part of its charm.
Located on Urbizonto Road, Tagpuan is right in the middle of the main area of San Juan. It’s within walking distance of many of the city’s most popular establishments and resorts, as well as the famous Urbiztondo beach. Because of this, Tagpuan has become one of the most-visited restaurants in La Union, and a staple among locals.
Jay-R Esquivel, La Union local and the first Filipino to compete in the World Surf League, shared with The GAME: “Parang everyone dito sa Surftown, nagkikita dito sa Tagpuan para kumain.”
Get your protein and carb fix
Whether you’re fueling up in the morning for a surf session, or you’re cooling down after being under the sun all day, Tagpaun sa San Juan’s rice bowls — arguably the most popular items on their menu — are sure to satisfy your cravings.
Esquivel himself vouches for their Chicken Adobo and Surftown Pares bowls. But apart from this, locals also love their bagnet, tapa, and Bibimbap bowls. Every order comes with a good serving of rice, some vegetables, and of course, classic Pinoy ulam pairings. It’s everything you need for a satisfying meal all in one bowl.
There’s lots to choose from
Apart from their delicious rice bowls, you should definitely try Tagpuan sa San Juan’s other comforting bowls. On their menu, they also have lugaw, goto, and mami — perfect choices if you’re coming from a cold surf, or if you’re looking for a late-night meal in San Juan (they’re open until 2:30 AM on Fridays and Saturdays!)
But if you’re looking for a midday snack, they also have chicken wings and tokwa’t baboy to keep you going throughout the day.
With all of this at reasonable prices and a great location for everyone in San Juan, it’s easy to see why Tagpuan has truly become a La Union staple — you definitely get your money’s worth whether you’re after fuel for surfing or just a good bowl of familiar favorites.
