There are so many sports documentaries to choose from nowadays, but here are four 2023 releases you should definitely see.
The last few years have seen a new dawn for documentaries, especially for the world of sports. Almost all competitions can be turned into engaging content — just look at the success of Netflix’s Drive to Survive. And we’re not complaining.
This 2023, a lot more sports documentaries have already come out, and a handful are still coming soon. It may be hard to keep up with all the new releases, but here are four (and maybe a couple more) that you should definitely see this year!
Stephen Curry: Underrated
One of Apple TV’s newest sports documentaries is arguably one of the best ones of 2023.
Stephen Curry: Underrated tells the story of one of the most talented and influential players, not only in the NBA but in the world of basketball. Starting from his early days as a small college player, this documentary showcases scenes and insider bits of his growth as an athlete, and how he transformed into a four-time NBA champion.
Quarterback
Quarterback is an eight-episode docuseries that puts into the spotlight the lives of four NFL quarterbacks: Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, the Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins, and the Atlanta Falcons’ Marcus Mariota.
In each episode, you’ll get a deeper look at what it truly means to be a quarterback, leading your team through play after play, suffering heavy hits, and putting your body to the absolute limit. This is one of the most difficult positions in all of sports for a reason, and this documentary series will definitely show you why, even if you don’t follow the NFL.
Super League: The War For Football
If you’re on a high from all the football action the world has been seeing, from the men’s World Cup that ended late last year to the historic 2023 Women’s World Cup, give Super League: The War For Football a try.
In the world of European football, big clubs exist in almost all the top leagues. Real Madrid and Barcelona in LaLiga, Manchester United and Liverpool in the Premier League, Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1, and the list goes on. This documentary series highlights the story of how a breakaway leagues featuring the top football teams in the world threatened various traditions of the sport, and how figures fought on both sides — to support it and to end it.
Reggie
Reggie Jackson is one of the most iconic baseball players of all time. Known as Mr. October for his stellar performances in the MLB playoffs during his career. But, there is more than what meets the eye. Not only is he a legendary player, but he is also one of the first iconic black athletes and was among the pioneers who fought for this advocacy.
Reggie, a new sports documentary released in 2023 on Prime Video, gives sports fans a firsthand look into his life — as a player, as an activist, and as an individual.
Bonus: World Cup Documentaries
Earlier this year, Netflix announced that they would be releasing two new sports documentaries that fans will love.
The first is what they currently call the ‘Untitled FIFA World Cup Series‘ which will be charting the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup that was arguably one of the best editions of the tournament our generation has witnessed. With this set to come out late this year, we’re definitely in for a treat as we’ll get new behind-the-scenes footage of a World Cup we can’t get over.
Apart from this, Netflix also has another documentary reportedly in the works about the 2023 Women’s World Cup, centering around the United States National Team. While we are not yet sure when this one will come out, it’s definitely another to look forward to.
