Even if you aren’t an athlete, there’s nothing quite like throwing a ball around in the sand.
If you’re the type of person who can’t sit still even while you’re on vacation, we get it. For some people, unwinding on a getaway means getting your heart rate up, working up a sweat, or even getting competitive. Luckily, many sports can be a lot more fun to play when you’re with your loved ones on the beach.
Here are some of the best beach sports you can play on your next trip!
Volleyball
When people on vacation think of playing sports on the beach, many are usually inspired by that scene in the iconic movie, Top Gun. After all, Tom Cruise makes beach volleyball look like a great way to pass the time while trying to achieve the perfect tan. On top of this, unlike indoor volleyball, playing this sport on the beach only requires two players per side, and given the fact that many beaches and resorts have their own volleyball nets already set up, this makes for one of the easiest sports to play, maybe even spontaneously, while you’re on a beach getaway.
Spikeball
If you’re eager to play some beach volleyball but don’t have the means to pack your own net (honestly, who does?), you should give spikeball a chance. Spikeball, which is also called roundnet, is similar to volleyball but with a more free-flowing setup and a smaller net. Only requiring two teams of two players, the players gather around a circular net and take turns hitting the ball onto the net, trying to get their opponents to miss. As it uses a smaller setup, it’s much easier to pack for your next beach trip, not to mention how addicting it can be.
Flag Football
Going on a beach trip with the entire family or a big group of friends? Pack some bandanas and an American football and you can use the beach as your pitch for a friendly game of flag football. Without the need to tackle your opponents, this is a great way to bond and test your chemistry with your teammates. Plus, it will also challenge your agility and ball-handling skills. It may take a while to warm up to the entire game, but trust us, once you get into the groove of it, your competitive side will surely come out. You may even start your own playbook as you go along…
Frisbee
Frisbee is a classic beach game and requires very little. Literally, all you need is a frisbee and you’re free to hit the sand and use up as much space as you want. This is a great way to work up a sweat and get your daily dose of cardio even while you’re on vacation. Plus, you can even get your dog involved.
Beach Tennis
Have you been riding the racket sports train lately? Well, we’ve got good news — you can play racket sports even when you’re on the sand. Beach tennis is starting to become a more popular sport, as many beaches, even in the Philippines, have their own setup. Combining the principles of tennis, badminton, and volleyball, players use paddle rackets to hit the ball over the net to the opponent’s side without letting the ball bounce twice on your own side. It may take some adjustment, especially for experienced tennis players, but once you get the hang of things, this makes for an addicting and fast-paced game.
Beach football
If you’re looking for a challenging beach sport to play, pack your football for your next getaway! Though the setup will be simple, playing football in the sand is a lot harder than playing on a pitch — the ball can get stuck in the sand and you’ll be running on an uneven surface (be careful!). But that’s what makes it even more exciting, even for players who don’t regularly play the sport!
