After a near miss on Saturday, Joanie Delgaco ensures that a quarterfinal ticket won’t be slipping through her fingers again.
Despite needing an extra 2,000 meters, Filipina rower Joanie Delgaco has successfully rebounded at the Paris Olympics rowing competitions.
On Sunday, Delgaco kept her Olympic medal hopes alive as she secured a quarterfinals ticket through the women’s single sculls repechages at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium in Île-de-France.
In a bounce-back effort, the Iriga pride topped Repechage 1 with a time of 7:55.00 to snag the quarterfinals berth. This was a second faster than her fourth-placed finish on Saturday, where she registered a time of 7:56.26.
On Sunday, Delgaco ensured her strong start wouldn’t go in vain anymore, as she led from Lane 3 right off the bat. Despite a scare from Vietnam’s Thi Hue Pham, Delgaco pulled away further at the 1,500-meter mark, opening a 23-meter gap over her regional rival.
Pham, though, will join Delgaco in Repechage 1, finishing second with a time of 8:00.97. Yariulvis Cobas Garcia, Evidelia Gonzales Jarquin, and Akoko Komlanvi will now be relegated to either Semifinals E or F.
Joining Delgaco and Pham is Fatemeh Mojallatopraghghale and Elis Ozbay from Repechage 2, alongside the pairing of Alejandra Alonso Alderete and Adriana Sanguineti from Repechage 3.
The Filipina rower is set to compete in Heat 3 of the July 30 quarterfinals, joining Olympic record holder Emma Twigg and Aurelia Janzen who finished second on Saturday’s heats. Here, Delgaco will need another top-three finish to enter Semifinals A/B of her competition.
