On a Roll: EJ Obiena Wins Gold in Copernicus Cup

Still on his ongoing medal streak in the 2023 Indoor Season, EJ Obiena wins gold once again at the Copernicus Cup in Poland.

Despite his heartbreak over the financial and logistical issues that prevent him from competing in the Asian Indoor Championships, EJ Obiena is still on a seemingly unstoppable medal streak.

At the Orlen Copernicus Cup in Torun, Poland on February 8, 2023, the World No. 3 pole vaulter cleared 5.87 meters on his second attempt to soar into another gold medal finish.

Dutch pole vaulter Rutger Koppelaar came in second and Ben Broeders for Belgium completed the podium with a third-place finish.

At the tournament, the Filipino Olympian again made an attempt to break his personal record of 5.91 meters but was unable to clear 5.92 and 5.95 meters.

This marks Obiena’s third gold medal in five tournaments and his fifth podium overall. Currently, he is five for five in top-three finishes in 2023.

After his victory in Poland, EJ Obiena shared his success with his social media followers. “Making it thru one day at a time. Now time to recover and try to get the much-needed rest,” he posted.

“Thank you everyone who has supported me. We still fighting. Maraming salamat po!”
