Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo qualifies for the 2024 Paris Olympics

Paris Awaits: Carlos Yulo is Headed for the 2024 Olympics

Carlos Yulo booked his ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics after making a comeback in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

Carlos Yulo is among the Filipino athletes who have put gymnastics into the mainstream Philippine sports conversation. But apart from this, perhaps an even bigger feat Yulo has achieved has been putting the Philippines on the map in the world of gymnastics as he continues to prove himself on the global stage. This is something he already accomplished in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Now, he will get the chance to build on this as an Olympian once again.

Carlos Yulo booked his ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday, October 1, as the highest-ranked eligible athlete in the floor exercise of the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Belgium. With this, Yulo becomes the second Filipino athlete to qualify for the upcoming Summer Games taking place in Paris next year.

Securing his spot

Carlos Yulo finished third in the floor exercise qualification after notching 14.6 points. Thus, he not only earned a ticket to the Olympics, but he also advanced to the finals of the event which takes place on Saturday, October 7.

Yulo was one of the Filipino athletes whom many expected to qualify for the Paris Olympics in 2024. A major reason as to why the Filipino gymnast skipped the Asian Games was so that he could instead compete in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, in his bid for an Olympic qualification.

His chances, however, started to slim down after he was unable to advance to the finals of the men’s individual all-around event after falling on his back in consecutive routines. Despite this, he still managed to make a significant comeback in the floor exercise event, and still get the job done — Yulo will be heading to the Olympics for the second time.

In his first-ever Olympic berth, hopes for Carlos Yulo were high, as he aimed to become the first Filipino to win an Olympic gold medal for artistic gymnastics. However, he was unable to make it to the medal round of his event. This time around, now a more experienced athlete, he will be looking to improve on this result in 2024.
