AJ Edu knows that he’s bound to take on added responsibilities for Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA Asia Cup.
Big man AJ Edu could have another shot to carry the flag again with Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA Asia Cup next month in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Edu is coming off a short break following a productive 2024-25 Japan B. League season, and getting back into game shape is his top priority as he begins training with Gilas for the Asia Cup.
“So I actually haven’t been able to practice yet, but [on Friday, July 11] we’ll start training and start preparing. Obviously, for us who play in the B-League, we’ve been out. You know, it’s been offseason for a couple of months now. So, yeah, just trying to get back,” Edu said following the partnership launch between Adidas and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas on Thursday, July 10.
This time around, however, more will be expected from Edu as part of Gilas’ frontline, especially with June Mar Fajardo’s health concerns, and the absence of Kai Sotto following an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury he suffered last January.
While he’s aware of the added responsibilities, Edu also emphasized the need to fill any roster gaps as one unit, especially with Gilas’ continued personnel woes amid their Asia Cup build-up.
“Understandably, with Kai out, that’s a tough loss for us, and I’m hoping that he can come back soon, and I’ve been in constant communication with him throughout his recovery. But yeah, you know? It’s not just me [who should step up],” Edu said.
“All of us as a team have to step up when one of the star players is out. But yeah, for sure, on my end, I have to step up as well.”
As hectic as Gilas’ Asia Cup preparations are, Edu is just grateful for another chance to play with the national team once more.
“Oh man, it’s always such a blessing and such an honor to represent the national team. I don’t take it for granted, you know?” Edu reflected. “The first time was at the [2023 FIBA] World Cup, and then my second time was [the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers], so it’s only been a few times representing Gilas. So I’m really excited and blessed to have this opportunity.”
