Germany defeated Serbia in a thrilling FIBA World Cup final, 83-77, to become the Basketball World Champions of 2023.
The Germans were undefeated throughout the entire tournament, and their consistency led them to their first-ever FIBA World Cup finals. However, Serbia did not make it an easy victory. The first half showcased why these two teams were playing in the final in the first place, taking turns at the basket, and ending the second quarter tied at 47-47.
It was in the third quarter when Germany really began to run away with the game. Thanks to their stellar defense, Serbia struggled to convert their shots. Meanwhile, the Germans’ sharp shooting allowed them to create a 12-point lead, ending the third quarter at 69-57.
However, the path to the trophy still did not seem clear just yet, as the Serbians began to catch up in the fourth quarter, outscoring their opponents to close the gap. But, despite their best efforts, Germany still managed to hold on to their lead to close the game at 83-77 to win their first-ever FIBA World Cup championship.
Dennis Schröder led Germany’s efforts throughout the tournament, and in the finals, he surely did not disappoint, scoring 28 points. For this, he was named the TISSOT MVP of the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
Overall, the tournament has been a success for players and fans alike, with big upsets, breakout performances, and thrilling action. And as the hosts of the 2023 FIBA World Cup, the Philippines got to witness another chapter written into the history books of basketball, as the new champions were crowned in the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday, September 10.
