Calling all anime and basketball fans! The hit movie The First Slam Dunk is coming to Philippine cinemas on February 1, 2023!
Slam Dunk is the most iconic basketball anime, and it has been since the 1990s. Based on Takehiko Inoue’s manga series and revolves around the story of a high school student, this sports anime has remained popular throughout the years, standing the test of time, and resonating across multiple generations.
Because of its timeless popularity, the story has continued to grow, adding its newest film to the entire series: The First Slam Dunk.
The story of this new film resonates with many viewers, which is a huge reason why it did so well in cinemas even outside of Japan.
The First Slam Dunk centers around Hanamichi Sakuragi, who is described as a ‘delinquent’ who has a long history of being dumped by girls. But, after he enrolls in a new school Shohoku High School, he suddenly falls for a new girl who loves the game of basketball. And just like any normal teenager, he got into the sport himself.
The story is very similar to many high school romances or coming-of-age films, a genre that is popular, especially among younger generations. But apart from the story, the graphics are what make the film even more enjoyable.
The graphics of this new film have been described to have “dazzling” with mesmerizing animation styles that capture audiences. In addition, the visuals also showcase the characters’ inner monologues to create complex storylines to engage the audience.
With all this, the film has stayed at number one in Japan for the sixth straight weekend since its release, where it sold over 319,000 tickets and earned around US$3.63 million last weekend alone.
Cumulatively, the film has earned around US$58.2 million in its early release.
The Philippines will soon get to find out why the hit film has been doing so well.
Opening in the Philippines!
Pioneer Films, one of the leading movie distributors in the Philippines, is bringing The First Slam Dunk to the country. The company was also responsible for bringing other hit animes to the Philippines such as Your Name and Weathering With You.
Pioneer films announced that the movie will premiere in local cinemas on February 1, 2023.
However, this isn’t the first time that Filipinos will get to enjoy this anime series. In the 1990s, when the original series was growing in popularity, the show also hit Philippine television and gained a Filipino following.
Now, a new generation of Filipino basketball and anime fans will get the chance to enjoy the iconic story.
