The Future of Sports Streaming Arrives at the 2023 FIBA World Cup

By The Game Team - September 04, 2023
360 cameras, watch parties, live stats — this is the future of sports streaming and Smart is introducing it at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

The concept of streaming is hardly new to the world. In fact, streaming has become an integral part of society, with new sites and platforms popping up again and again for all things entertainment — movies, television series, and of course, sports.

Sports streaming has been around for the longest time. This is, after all, how fans stay up-to-date with their favorite teams and athletes. And while you may think you know everything there is to know about sports streaming, think again.

Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) and US-based Radisys® Corporation have successfully run a beta test of the new Smart LiveStream App with new groundbreaking streaming features — just in time for the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

What’s new in sports streaming?

As FIBA’s official global partner, Smart collaborated with Radisys in tapping select Filipino personalities to experience the future of mobile streaming as they tuned into the 2023 FIBA World Cup match between the Philippines and Italy through the Smart LiveStream App. Using the platform, they were able to experience new advancements in the world of sports streaming.

The users were able to enjoy the action inside (and beyond) all four corners of the basketball court, using a 360 Camera that users are free to adjust on their own to get their desired viewing angle. With this, the fans were able to capture all the action on the hardcourt however they wanted to.

On top of this, they were also able to make use of an interactive Live Chat feature to make the FIBA World Cup a more engaging and fun experience. It also included a Live Poll to gain insight into all the viewers’ thoughts on the games. Best of all, if fans want to enjoy the action with their family or friends, Smart’s technology also features a ‘Watch Party’ tab to share the stream with up to seven other people.

Of course, the sports streaming experience would not be complete without the ‘Match Up’ and ‘Box Score’ tabs on the app to show team and individual stats, respectively, all in real time.

All of these features have been tested in the first beta test by PLDT and Smart with Radysis, and this marks just the start of the future of sports streaming.

“The successful showcase of game-changing features on the Smart LiveStream App is a major step forward in our ongoing collaboration with Radisys, and in our shared thrust to provide the best mobile experience to Filipinos. It gives a glimpse of a more fun, interactive, and immersive streaming experience that we will soon bring to the fingertips of our subscribers powered by our award-winning mobile network,” said PLDT and Smart President and CEO Alfredo S. Panlilio.

The first beta test of this new Smart LiveStream App is among Smart’s efforts to bring the best on-ground and online basketball experiences to Filipinos during the country’s hosting of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 from August 25 to September 10.
