Carlos Yulo finishes the Paris 2024 men’s all-around final in 12th place — a huge jump after opening the competition in 24th place.
Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo secured a respectable 12th-place finish in the men’s individual all-around final at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The 24-year-old athlete showcased his versatility and skill across six apparatus as he demonstrated why he remains one of the Philippines’ brightest hopes for an Olympic medal.
Yulo’s journey through the six apparatus was a testament to his versatility and skill. He began with an 11.900 score on the pommel horse — a relatively low number after a stumble on his dismount — which put him at the bottom of the 24-man pack at the end of the first rotation. However, he was quick to bounce back as he followed this with a 13.933 on the rings.
The vault, one of Yulo’s strengths, saw him soar with an impressive 14.766. He then maintained his momentum with a 14.500 on the parallel bars, which helped him jump all the way up to 12th place, and a 13.600 on the horizontal bar.
Yulo concluded his all-around campaign with a flourish, scoring 14.333 on the floor exercise, his signature event.
Throughout the competition, Caloy exhibited poise and focus, navigating the pressure-cooker environment of Olympic gymnastics with aplomb. His total score of 83.032 placed him solidly in the top half of the world’s elite gymnasts — a testament to his hard work and dedication.
While the podium remained just out of reach, Yulo’s performance was a clear signal that he belongs among the sport’s top echelon. His 12th place finish represents not just personal growth but a milestone for Philippine gymnastics on the international stage.
The gold medal in the all-around competition went to Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka, who delivered a masterful display of gymnastics to claim Olympic glory. China’s Zhang Boheng secured the silver medal, while his compatriot Ruoteng Xiao completed the podium with bronze, displaying China’s strength in the sport.
For Yulo, though, the Olympics are far from over.
His focus now shifts to his upcoming apparatus finals, where he has legitimate medal aspirations. The floor exercise final, scheduled for August 3rd, will see Yulo attempt to convert his second-place qualification performance into Olympic hardware. One day later, on August 4th, he’ll take to the vault, another event where he has shown world-class potential.
As Yulo prepares for these crucial finals, his all-around performance serves as both a confidence booster and a springboard. With two more opportunities to etch his name in Olympic history, the Filipino gymnast stands poised to captivate audiences and potentially bring home the Philippines’ first Olympic gymnastics medal.
The best may be yet to come for Carlos Yulo in Paris.
