There’s a lot to be excited about for the first big international fighting game tournament of the year.
Things are heating up in the Land of the Rising Sun as Evo Japan 2024 is right around the corner. Running through the weekend of April 27-29, the third installment of the eastern version of the annual Evo series of tournaments is shaping up to be its most exciting yet.
We have the debut of three new fighting games on the Evo stage. Tekken 8 is, of course, taking the spotlight as this will be its first Master+ tier tournament of the year. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising finally gets a spot on the Evo stage after being a side tournament last year. And last but not least is Under Night In-Birth II [Sys:Celes], the sequel to one of the most beloved anime fighting game series of all time, is making its big international splash at Evo Japan 2024.
Bigger and Better
With 8,966 registered entrants, higher than last year’s Evo Japan, and with all three days sold out, this year’s Evo Japan is looking to continue the event’s knack for breaking records. Expectations are high for the young fighting game event, especially for more potential news on upcoming fighting games.
Street Fighter 6 and Guilty Gear STRIVE are building up the hype train as they enter Evo Japan on a new patch. Most fans however are eager to see if they have any new info on their last season pass characters. For Guilty Gear it’s for Slayer, the series’ fan-favorite vampire, while for Street Fighter it’s for the demon himself, Akuma.
The biggest spotlight has to go to developers SNK as demos for the eagerly anticipated Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will be available in Evo Japan. This sequel to the 1999 classic fighting game promises to be as flashy and stylish as the original. It’s people’s first chance to play the hottest fighting game of 2025 and we can’t wait to see what people discover on the show floor.
You can catch all the Evo Japan 2024 action on their official Youtube and Twitch channels.
