MDL Indonesia to Feature Women’s Teams in Upcoming Professional Season

By The Game Team - February 28, 2024
It’s one small step for the MDL Indonesia, a giant leap for women’s esports.

Indonesia makes esports history as their Mobile Legends Development League (MDL) is officially letting women’s teams compete in the league. In cooperation with the Woman Star League (WSL), two women’s teams from the league will get the opportunity to compete in the upcoming MDL ID season 10.

The two teams will come from the champion of WSL Season 8 and the highest-ranking team in the 2024 WSL Invitational leaderboard. If the WSL champion is also the highest-ranked WSLI team, then the runner-up will get the last slot.

Esports for all

Gender equality continues to be a topic of conversation in the Mobile Legends community. This collaboration is aiming to answer the question “Can the women’s teams compete with the men’s teams in a tournament?”

According to Moonton Esports Indonesia Public Relations Manager Azwin Nugraha, MDL Indonesia already includes teams of women who are very compatible with the MDL mission. They carry with them the theme of ‘esports for everyone’ that helps make the MDL grow.

“Mobile Legends Esports tournaments including MDL, MPL, MSC, M Series, and others are not male-only tournaments. From the beginning Mobile Legends Esports came with inclusiveness so it is not limited to anyone, including our relatives who have special needs,” says Azwin. “Inclusivity is not only about gender equality, but it means that all audiences can participate and compete at different levels to realize their dreams.”

Krishna Aurora, Head of Event WSL, welcomed the initiative of MDL Indonesia. He stated that this collaboration can also help female players who often get little opportunity to improve skills.

“This will be the first step for female players to challenge themselves and rise to the next level,” said Kresna. “With the entry of the WSL team into the MDL arena, we will be providing a venue where women compete equally with men in the same scene.”

MDL Indonesia now provides an opportunity for women’s teams to officially compete in Moonton-organized tournaments. The strength of Indonesia’s women’s teams should not be underestimated as they have already achieved international success. Bigetron Era’s women’s team became the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Women’s Invitational 2022 champions. They were also Indonesia’s Mobile Legends women’s team who won a gold medal during the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia.
