SIBOL Settles for Silver at the Asian Esports Games 2024

The Philippines’ women’s MLBB team put up a valiant fight against the resurging Indonesia.

The inaugural Asian Esports Games 2024 concludes with the two titans of MLBB clashing once again, this time with Indonesia taking the gold. Team SIBOL tried to put a halt to Indonesia’s rampage but they just couldn’t hold out, losing to them 4-2.

Organized by the Thailand Esports Federation and sanctioned by the Asian Electronic Sports Federation, the Asian Esports Games 2024 is another step forward to bringing esports to the Olympic level. This is also a landmark event for women’s esports with 20 regional teams coming together to compete.

From the onset, team Indonesia were already looking unstoppable, dominating their group 4-0. It was clear that the team had something to prove after getting swept in the grand finals of MWI 2024. They had a similar path in IESF WEC 2024, tearing through that tournament to take the gold and suffering only one game loss in their entire run.

The Philippines, on the other hand, have looked rather shaky ever since their championship run at MWI 2024. They failed to qualify for IESF WEC 2024 but were looking better coming into the Asian Esports Games 2024. Their one loss in the group stage came from Indonesia which, while painful, shows they still have time to improve.

Team SIBOL was unfazed during their playoff run until they met their match against Indonesia at the upper bracket finals. The girls were swept away by the Indonesian tide, falling to them 2-0. Fortunately, the team bounced back after taking the lower bracket finals from China to have their fated revenge match.

While it initially looked good for Team SIBOL, it was clear that Indonesia was playing on a different level. Indonesia’s wins have all been fast, decisive, and unrelenting — a formula that not even the Philippines could stop. In the end, the Philippines handed Indonesia their two-game losses for the entire tournament and came home with silver medals from the Asian Esports Games 2024.
