History-making Filipina rower Joanie Delgaco will cap off her Paris Olympics in Finals D of the women’s single sculls.
Filipina rower Joanie Delgaco is headed to Finals D of the Paris Olympics women’s single sculls following her fifth-place finish in Wednesday’s semifinals C/D1 at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium in Île-de-France.
Delgaco registered a time of 8:00.18, just enough to avoid another last-placed finish in today’s round.
The Filipina took off on a strong start to keep herself close to third-placer Beatriz Cunha Tavares Cardoso from Brazil, but began slowing down by the 1,000-meter mark. Despite slipping to sixth place, Delgaco recovered enough to seal her fifth-placed finish.
Jovana Arsic topped semifinals C/D 1 with her time of 7:44.60. Following the Serbian is Nina Kostanjsek from Slovenia (7:48.86), and Cunha Tavares Cardoso (7:49.96), who will head to Finals C on Saturday.
Accompanying Delgaco to Finals D is Paraguay’s Alejandra Alonso Alderete (7:56.50), and Iran’s Fatemeh Mojallaltopraghghale (8:06.23).
Finals D kicks off this Friday, August 2, where Delgaco may finish somewhere between the 19th to 24th slot. Besides her semifinals C/D 1 peers, Delgaco will also be competing against Turkey’s Elis Ozbay, Adriana Sanguineti, and Vietnam’s Thi Hue Pham.
Despite falling short of the Finals C berth, Joanie Delgaco’s Olympic debut further highlights the potential of Philippine rowers on the international stage. Prior to her and Cris Nievarez in Tokyo, no Filipino paddler has gone past the repechage rounds in the Olympics.
Joanie Delgaco is also the first-ever Filipina rower in the Summer Games, which makes her Olympic debut nothing short of inspiring.
