Joanie Delgaco Places 6th In Rowing Quarterfinals, Heads To Classification Races

By RJ Ballecer - July 30, 2024
Now out of medal contention, Joanie Delgaco’s Olympics debut will continue in the classification brackets.

The Philippines’ Joanie Delgaco will now head to the classification races of Olympic rowing following her sixth-place finish in the women’s single sculls quarterfinals on Wednesday at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium in Île-de-France.

Rowing in quarterfinals heat 3, Delgaco registered a time of 7:58.30, eliminating her from Olympic medal contention. With only the top three rowers advancing to Semifinals A/B, the Filipina now heads to Semifinals C/D, one of two classification brackets for Olympic rowing.

Reigning Olympic gold medalist Emma Twigg topped heat 3 with a time of 7:26.89. She was followed by Swiss prodigy Aurelia Janzen (7:31.12) and Spain’s Virginia Diaz Rivas (7:34.01), who made a late charge to overtake Serbian Jovana Arsic (7:56.18) near the finish line.

Semifinals C/D, meanwhile, will kick off this Tuesday, July 31, where Delgaco will vie for a Finals C slot. Also moving to classification from heat 3 is Diana Dymchenko (7:53.76) and Arsic, who slipped to fifth following Diaz Rivas’ comeback.

The first-ever Filipina Olympic rower, Joanie Delgaco has shown promise in her Olympic debut, almost qualifying early for today’s quarterfinals. Despite missing out, she topped her repechage bracket, even improving on her time from Saturday’s heats to secure a slot.

Joanie was also one of four Asian scullers in today’s 24-woman round alongside Vietnam’s Thi Hue Pham, Iran’s Fatemeh Mojallaltopraghghale, and Uzbekistan’s Anna Prakaten.

In the classification rounds, Joanie Delgaco can still produce the Philippines’ best finish in Olympic rowing. Filipino sculler Cris Niverarez, who finished 23rd in Tokyo, currently holds the country’s best result in the water-based sport.
