Suffering from an injury, Filipino hurdler John Cabang announced that he will no longer be able to run in the next round of his Paris 2024 event.
John Cabang can now call himself an Olympian.
The Filipino hurdler made his Olympic debut last Sunday in the first round of the men’s 110m hurdles event. Finishing with a time of 13.66s, he finished 6th place in heat 1. Although this meant that he missed out on a direct path to the semifinals, he still earned one more chance to advance through the repechage rounds, scheduled today, August 6, at 4:50 PM Philippine time.
However, just an hour before Cabang was slated to appear on the track again, he posted an Instagram story making a big announcement on his status in the Games.
“I AM SO SORRY,” he announces in the story. “I’m not gonna be able to run due to an injury.”
This definitely comes as a shock, especially given that his round 1 performance was just a few tenths off his personal best and the Philippine national record of 13.37 seconds. However, this is a reality that many athletes are gripped with.
In fact, fellow Filipino hurdler Lauren Hoffman, who also exited the competition after the women’s 400m hurdles repechage round yesterday, also revealed that she was challenged by an injury while competing in her events.
Although he may be exiting the competition earlier than anticipated, this is in no way the end of John Cabang’s career as an elite athlete. At just 22 years old, this Olympic appearance will hopefully be the first of many. As he continues to gain more experience as a track and field athlete, he will surely be aiming to come back to this stage even stronger.
