Filipina hurdler Lauren Hoffman will forever be an Olympian despite bowing out early in the Paris Olympics.
Filipina hurdler Lauren Hoffman has bowed out of the Paris Olympics after finishing seventh in heat 3 of the women’s 400m hurdles repechage round at the Stade de France on Monday, August 5.
Starting from lane 5, Hoffman registered a time of 58.28 seconds, notably slower than her 57.84 second finish from Sunday’s heats. Despite a solid start, the Filipina was unable to maintain her pace as the rest of the pack pulled away.
Hometown bet Shana Grebo and Ukrainian Anna Ryzhykova topped heat 3 with respective times of 54.91 and 54.95 seconds, stamping their class right off the bat. With only the top two fastest per heat advancing, the two are now off to the semifinals this Wednesday, August 7.
Paris marks Lauren Hoffman’s Olympic debut, who had been donning the Philippine colors since last year. Even with the early exit, this is still a huge milestone for the 25-year-old’s fairly young athletics career.
Hoffman is also the Philippine record holder for the women’s 400m hurdles after she clocked a time of 55.72 seconds at the Drake Relay last April 28. In doing so, she surpassed her previous national record of 56.39 seconds.
With Hoffman’s exit, the Philippine athletics representation is now down to star pole vaulter EJ Obiena and hurdler John Cabang. Obiena will attempt to score a medal in the pole vault finals, while Cabang hopes to enter the semis through the men’s 110m hurdles repechage.
Pole vault finals takes place on Tuesday early morning in the Philippines, while the men’s 110m hurdles repechage is scheduled later in afternoon.
