The veteran Filipina boxer just had too much experience for her much younger opponent as she got the nod of all five judges.
Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Nesthy Petecio’s quest for that elusive gold in the Paris 2024 Olympics got off to a solid start with an impressive unanimous decision win over Jaismine of India in their round of 32 bout in the women’s 57kg division at the North Paris Arena.
Jaismine, only 22 and a bronze medalist at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, had a huge height advantage, but the more experienced Petecio, 32, cut her down to size with slick movement and well-timed left hands and combinations.
Petecio, giving up seven inches in height, took the first round 4-1 by landing the more telling blows. It was the same story in the second round, which the Filipina swept on all five judges’ scorecards. Jaismine went all out in the third round, but managed to win the approval of just one judge as most of her punches found nothing but air.
The final scores were 30-27 three times and 29-28 twice all for Petecio, who moves on to the round of 16 where she will face hometown bet Amina Zidani of France on Saturday at 2:00 a.m.
