From the creators of ‘Drive to Survive,’ is the new docuseries ‘Break Point’ going to turn tennis into the next booming sport?
Netflix recently released the official teaser of their upcoming original docu-series: Break Point.
From the creators of the hit series F1: Drive to Survive, Break Point follows the lives of a diverse group of tennis players, both on and off the court, as they compete at the highest level of the sport.
Tennis is one of the toughest sports to crack into on the professional level. As an individual sport, the odds of getting the opportunity to compete in the limited major tournaments in the world are slim. And even slimmer, winning.
This is one of the things that makes tennis so interesting. You have to work hard to make it to the top competition. And if you get there, once you do, you need to work increasingly harder as you get better because there are literally thousands of others fighting to take your spot.
In Break Point, Netflix hopes to uncover this part of the sport.
Inside Tennis
As Netflix describes the show, “Break Point gets up close and personal with top players on the tennis circuit through an entire year traveling across the globe for all four Grand Slams and the ATP and WTA tours.”
However, what makes Break Point unique is that it will not be focusing entirely on the legends we all know and love. Instead, the docuseries captures the “changing of the guard,” putting the younger tennis players in the spotlight.
We are at a unique point in tennis history. As the top three players who have dominated the game for so long — Rafa Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic — near the ends of their careers (Federer has already bid tennis farewell), a new line of future greats are coming to take their thrones.
In the official teaser, several well-known players are already featured, such as Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Serena Williams. But, Netflix shares that the series will follow players such as Stefanos Tsitsipas, Nick Kyrgios, Casper Ruud, Paula Badosa, and Iga Swiatek, to name a few.
To add to the spark of the show, they also have legends like Maria Sharapova and John McEnroe who will be sharing their own insights into the game.
Indeed, the series will shed new light on the sport, and likely reveal things that even the biggest tennis fans did not know before.
The first five episodes will debut on January 13, and the second half is set to come out in June 2023.
