Vanessa Sarno did not have the debut she may have been hoping for.
The Philippines’ hopes of another Olympic weightlifting medal will have to wait another four years, as the country’s final competitor, Vanessa Sarno bows out of the women’s 71kg category in Paris 2024.
Hopes were high for the 20-year-old to bring home another medal, as she has impressed on the international level at such a young age.
However, Vanessa suffered from three unsuccessful attempts to lift 100kg in snatch, which ultimately resulted in a DNF (did not finish).
With this, the Filipino weightlifter bowed out of the competition early, placing her out of medal contention.
While this may be a disappointment, especially to mark her Olympic debut, Sarno has a long career ahead of her. Making it to Paris at 20 years old is success in itself, and we can be confident that she will be back and hungry for more in four years’ time.
