Things are Heating Up at MSI 2024: Here’s What You Need to Know

The stakes have gotten bigger at the first international League of Legends tournament of the year.

It’s that time of the year when the best League of Legends teams in the world head to MSI 2024 to see where they stand among the elite. However, they are fighting for more than just pride as they converge at Chengdu, China, from May 1 to 19.

This year’s Mid-Season Invitational champion will secure their region a direct qualification to the 2024 World Championship. This essentially guarantees an additional slot for Worlds for that region. Additionally, the next best-performing region will also grant their region an additional seed for Worlds.

With stakes this high, it’s up to the 12 participating teams to play some of the best League of Legends that they’ve ever played before. The four major regions, EMEA, South Korea, North America, and China, each get two representatives. Meanwhile, Latin America, Brazil, Vietnam, and the Pacific, each get one team.

The Format

The top seed of the four major regions will automatically move on to the bracket stage. The remaining teams will have to play through play-ins, where they will be divided into two groups. They will play through a double elimination bracket, each consisting of best-of-three matches, where only the top two move on.

At the bracket stage, teams will be seeded and drawn to ensure that no teams from the same region will face each other in the same bracket. From there it’s a series of best-of-five, double-elimination matches until one team is crowned the MSI 2024 champion.
