5 Summer Sports You Need to Try to Get the Most Out of the Sun

By Annika Caniza - February 23, 2023
Get your sunblock and shades ready, athletes! Here are the top five summer sports you should try to stay fit in the heat.

When we were kids, summer meant all the free time in the world to spend getting out in the sun, and playing with our friends. Why can’t that still be true, no matter what age?

We’re here to tell you that it definitely can be.

Here are five summer sports for you to try out this year that will get you out in fresh air, get you fit, and get you to maximize the hours you spend in the sun, whether you’re with company or not.

1. Beach Volleyball

If you’re a fan of the movie Top Gun, then beach volleyball should definitely be high on your list of summer sports to try this year.

The next time you find yourself lounging on the sand with your friends or family, why not get up and round everyone up for a fun game of volleyball? It’s a full-body workout, you’ll get to soak up the sun and work up a sweat, and you’ll have fun doing it. What could be better?

2. Mountain Biking

There really is no better time to go mountain biking than in the sun. It may be a little bit nerve-wracking, especially for beginners, but it’s definitely one of those summer sports that you need to try at least once.

Mountain biking gets you to go outside and enjoy nature, it’s a great form of low-impact exercise, it really gets the legs working, and it’s a fun activity you can also share with other people too. Don’t you miss the summers you used to spend biking with your neighborhood friends?

3. Triathlon

If you’ve never done a triathlon before, we’re not saying you need to sign up for one soon. But, if there is ever a “best” time to start training for one, it’s in the summer.

Swimming, biking, and running are all better when done under the sun. The water won’t be too cold, the headwinds won’t be too strong, and you’ll hardly have to worry about the rain getting in your way. So if you’re looking for a way to stay fit this summer, these three workouts rolled into one sport are definitely your solution.

4. Surfing

If surfing is on your bucket list (who doesn’t have surfing on their bucket list?), what better time to finally check off that box than this summer?

Living in the Philippines, we’re at an advantage with the surf spots around the country. Among the most popular ones, La Union and Baler are both within driving distance if you’re up for a road trip this summer, and for a full-on summer vacation, Siargao is a great bet.

Is going to be the year you finally get to ride the waves?

5. Golf

You can always tell who’s been golfing during the summer because of the tan lines golfers get from spending hours under the sun. And if you’ve been wanting to join the club, why not start now?

If you’re not looking for anything that is too high in cardiovascular intensity, golf is one of the best summer sports, especially if you want to make the most out of the sun, and if you want to spend time in the fresh air. Plus, it’s a great excuse to hang out with your buddies for hours.

With all the outdoor summer sports out there to try out, which ones are you trying out this year?
