SIBOL Philippines Finishes on Top as Mobile Legends WEC 2023 Champions

By Ramon Domingo - September 04, 2023
It’s another strong international showing for Philippine esports.

The IESF World Esports Championship came to a close last weekend with SIBOL riding high. The Philippines continued to show their prowess as they became the WEC Mobile Legends champions, their second international gold medal this year.

It was nothing but pure dominance for the Philippines in the WEC. After going undefeated in groups, AP.Bren, representing the Philippines, continued their streak all the way until the grand finals. The team faced off against rivals Bigetron Alpha, representing Indonesia, who were also the ones who eliminated AP.Bren in the Snapdragon Pro Series Challenge Finals.

AP.Bren had a shaky start in the grand finals where misjudged calls led to them losing game one. After that, the team cleaned up their play and took the remaining three games from Bigetron Alpha. Besides getting their revenge, AP.Bren’s WEC victory also means that Angelo “Pheww” Arcangel earned his third international gold medal. A huge milestone for the star Mid Laner.

Overall Top Performers

Aside from being crowned the WEC Mobile Legends champions, the Philippines excelled in the world of Tekken as well.

Coming in at second place for Tekken 7 was Alexndre “AK” Laverez, falling to Pakistan’s Atiff Ijaz in a best-of-nine grand final. AK had a similar dominant run to the grand finals, dropping only one game against Denmark before facing Atiff. Despite using a large number of games to test multiple strategies, AK couldn’t overcome Atiff’s skill and mastery of his signature character, Akuma.

Thanks to AK’s silver medal finish, the Philippines earned the unique title of best-performing country in the WEC. Not only did the Philippines have a podium finish in two different games, but their gold and silver medals trumped Kyrgyzstan’s gold and bronze, making them the top-performing country in the entire tournament.
